UJA Leaders Call for Funds

Agency Clears Quoted
Criticism of OSE Work

week joined at the UJA's National Emergency Conference in
a strong call for mobilization.of community resources to meet
the urgent "dollar crisis" of the United Jewish Appeal. Left
to right are ELIAHU ELATH, Israeli Ambassador to the U. S.;
AUBREY S. EBA'N, chief. Israeli delegate to the UN General
Assembly; JUDGE MORRIS ROTHENBERG, national chairman
of the United Jewish Appeal and the United Palestine Ap-
peal; and. WILLIAM ROSENWALD, UJA natioinal chairman
and honoiary president of the United Service for New

Restitution Laws Are Bearing Fruit

NEW YORK—(JTA)—Reports

Greeks Allow Migration

ATHENS, (JTA)—The Israeli
consul here has received assur-
ances from the Greek' War Min-
istry that Greek Jews whose
age groups have recently been
called up for service with the
armed forces will be permitted
to migrate to Israel if they
choose.

The institution starts its Op-

on the situation of Jews in Eu- erations with a capital of 1,000,-

ropean countries and on the
present state of affairs in Israel
were given here by Dr. Nahum
Goldman, chairman of the
American section of the Jewish
Agency, and Dr. Israel Gold-
. stein, retiring treasurer of the
Agency.
Dr. Goldman emphasized that
the restitution law which the
American military authorities
have promulgated, and a similar
one which was put Into - opera-
tion in the British zone recent-
ly, are now beginning to bear
fruit.- Considerable property, he
said, is being, and will continue
to be, turned over to Jewish suc-
cessor organizations entitled to
take over such property.
Dr. Goldman predicted that
the problem of the Jewish DPs
in Germany and Austria will be
liquidated within a few months.
By the end of the year, he said,
only a few camps -will remain
with perhaps 3,000 invalid or
otherwise incapacitated persons
who must be rehabilitated be-
fore they 'can proceed to Israel.
Once the camps are emptied,
there will remain between 30,000
and 40,000 Jews in Germany in-
eluding many aged persons,
some who are married to non-
Jews, and a number of German
Jews and DP's who are not yet
ready to leave Germany, he re-
ported.

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—The
Jewish Agency made it clear
that its member, Eliahu Dobkin
did not refer to the OSE, Jew-
ish Health Society, when he said
at a recent press conference that
some organizations which have
hitherto worked outside of Is-
rael now claim to be doing 70
percent of the work which is ac-
tually being done by the Jewish
Agency in Israel.
This remark was made with
regard to the ORT, the Agency
pointed out, on the basis of a
statement by Dr. Aaron Synga-
lowsky, ORT leader, in Johan-
nesburg, printed in the South
African Zionist Record on June
3, to the effect that "the ORT
trained 70 percent of Israel's
skilled workers and now begins
to develop agriculture, especial-
ly mechanifed agriculture." This
statement by Dr. Syngalowsky
shows that he used such remarks
for propaganda purposes, the
Jewish Agency declared, adding
that "it is clear that Dobkin in-
tended to stress Dr. Syngalow-
sky's exaggeration."
