New Biography of
Albert Einstein

The fieweSt:biograiih.V of Al-
bert Einste i 17, by Catherine
Owen•Peare, published by Henry
Holt & Co., 257 Fourth Ave.,
New York 10, indicated as being
"for young people," will be tound
highly interesting by people of
all ages and all walks of - life.
Containing special section of
photographs, by Lotte Jacobi
and others, this volume will be
found valuable
both as excel-
lent writing and
its incorporation
of all of Prof.
:Einstein's inter-
ests.
Dr. Einstein
emerges as a
very human be-
ing from the
of this bi-
Dr. Einstein ography. We see
him as a youngster with his
shortcomings, as a bewildered
fellow who at the outset had no
idea what he would do in life,
as the genius he emerged later
in life. •
Naturally, the author covers
fully the European tragedy
which caused Prof. Einstein to
leave his native land and to be-
come so Valuable a citizen of the
United States.
An important section of the
book is devoted to the eminent
scientist's interest in the Zion-
ist cause. The author reviews Dr.
Einstein's part in the develop-
ment of the atomic bomb and
incorporates in the book his
completeletter to President
Roosevelt calling his attention to
the revolutionaryScientific idea.
The long bibliography revealS
to what extent the author went
to secure available information
about Prof. Einstein. Her biog-
raphy is a most valuable book
and will be read with great fas-
cination.

Albert Maltz's Book:
Human and Humorous

Albert Maltz, who already has
made. a good mark with a num-
ber of fine novels, is on the
scene again with a charming
story-"The Journey of Simon
McKeever"-published by Little,
Brown & Co., 34 Beacon St.,
Boston.
McKeever, the hero, is an old
an who displays an unusual
amount of courage in leaving an
old folks home for a long trip
to be treated for arthritis. The
experiences of his trip, the dif-
ficulties he had reaching the
doctor, the kindness shown him
by an old couple who took him
to his destination make a very
human and fascinating story.
Simon is not cured. He returns
to his home and makes peace
with his management. But his
return is based on his own
terms, on availability of his pre-
ferred brand of tobacco and the
use of a library for the prepara-
tion of a book.
It is a human story. And it is
packed full of good, wholesome
humor.
Albert Maltz was born in
Brooklyn in 1908 of immigrant
parents and was brought up in
an atmosphere of combined Ad
and new world cultures. ' ,In
the afternoon," he has written,
"I might play handball against
a garage, but in the evening, I
watched my grandmother care-
fully gather the parings of her
fingernails and put them into
the fire lest evil be done to
her." After attending public
schools in Brooklyn, he entered
Columbia and was graduated in
1930. For the next two years
he studied - playwriting. under
Yale's George Pierce Baker and
collaborated with George Sklar
on plays.
His short stories have been
published in 40 anthologies,
many of whh are textbooks in
college literature courses.
