Four Excellent Books
For Youths of All Ages

The reopening 'of school cre-
ates renewed interest in chil-
dren's books for home and
classroom use and as gifts.
Viking Press, 18 E. 48th St.,
New York, continues to render
important services through its
children's book department.
For very young children, we
recommend highly Bob McRey-
nolds' "Sleepy to the Rescue,"
with photographs by Roy Dav-
enport. It is a story about two
dogs. One of them, Sleepy, goes
to school and gets an "educa-
tion," but also gets into trouble,
dragging his friend, Sandy, the
police dog, into difficulties. A
desire for more hamburger is
the greed that causes the trou-
ble. There is a cat in it—as
every dog story should have—
and there is adventure that will
inspire many a youngster.
Sleepy is owned by the author
who portrays a true story about
his own dog and about Sandy,
who belongs to his neighbor.
McReynolds and Davenport have
a good work to their credit.

"The Bells of Bleecker Street"

For somewhat . older children,
there are other Viking books,
among them "The Bells of
Bleecker Street," written and il-
lustrated by Valenti Angelo.
This, too, is a story about a hero
who gets into-trouble. This time
it is Joey Enrico, 12, who lives
on Bleecker Street in New York.
His father is away at war and
he gets into difficulty at the pic-
ture frame shop where he broke
a:toe off a statue; also when he
tried to bury Peggy's cat. All
ends well, of course. Through-
out the book, the young reader
is treated to lots of happenings
and to some clever story-telling.
Marjorie Torrey's Book
Marjorie Torrey is the author
and illustrator of another fine
book for children of 10 to 14,
under the title "The Merriwea-
thers," also a Viking creation.
It is the narrative about a fam-
ily of seven New Yorkers who
moved to a farm. Their garden,
the brook which needed dam-
ming, the illnesses that set in,
the worries over making ends
meet make this book a very hu-
man, well-reading story.

well known for his short stories
which have appeared in Jewish
periodicals for a number of
years. They are short, interest-
holding tale8 about Jewish life—
the everyday activities of our
people, our holidays, etc.
He has compiled 98 of his
stories which are included in
the latest b o o k• produced by
Bloch Publishing Co. of New
York, under the title "Here to
Stay."
The -five last stories are de-
voted to themes _dealing' with
the old world. His holiday stor-
ies are especially effective. In
many instances, his short stor-
ies reflect the spirit of America
and interest in Israel.. His nar-
ratives are delightful, replete
with humor and human in every
respect. The reader will be fas-
cinated by them.

FOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Another Viking story worthy
of praise is Tom Robinson's
"Trigger John's Son." It is a
story about an orphan from
Maine who is on the way to
Pennsylvania. He objects to
being adopted, ' slips off- the
train, gets in with a gang of
12-year-olds who copsider them-
selves tough. All ends well for
the orphan—but also for the
gang whose. boys are brought
into proper American democrat-
ic action the democratic way.
The relationship between young
and old distinguishes this novel
and gives it the status of a
Mark Twain narrative. The 80
fine drawings by Robert Mc-
Closkey enhance the book. It
will be enjoyed—for its good
writing and its adventures—by
young and old.
