TEL AVIV (JTA)—The Hun-
garian section, of the Israeli
Communist Party, one of the
largest groups in the movement,
withdrew from the party in
protest against the conviction in
Budapest of Hungarian Zionist
leaders charged with aiding il-
legal mass migration of Jews to
Israel. This is the second split
in the Israeli Communist ranks
in the last five months, 25
members having been expelled
earlier for "nationalist devia-
tions."

dence, the proposed Israeli con-
stitution and the adresses of •
David Ben-Gurion and Dr.
Chaim Weizmann are included
as appendices to this volume.

History of Israel's
Rise to Statehood
Told by Ben-Jacob

In "The Rise of Israel," pub-
lished by Israel Publishing So-
ciety, 501 Fifth Ave., New York,
Jeremiah Ben-Jacob covers the
history of Israel's rise to state-
hood, beginning with earliest
times down to the present day.
The author reviews the early
history of the Jews. He devotes
a chapter in answer to the ques-
tion "What is a Jew?"—from the-
points of view of religion, race
and nationality—and comes to
the conclusion that "It is mes-
sianism and not nationalism
which is the main motif of Jew-
ish history."
He discusses the road to Zion,
emancipation and its problems.
