Today, in the age of the
United Nations, the average citi-
zen accepts international coop-
eration in all matters as a
matter of course. There are in-
ternational bodies to allocate
capital investment assistance for
nations which need it, world
bodies to study the needs of
labor, of aviation, of commerce,
as well as an international orga-
nization - to allocate surplus
foodstuffs to nations in need.
Several generations ago, how-
ever, international cooperation
was restricted to conquest and
war, care of civilians caught be-
tween warring armies and a few
other fields. Something as mun-
dane as food was not considered
a fit field for international en-
deavor. Today, the UN Food and
Agriculture Organization recog-
nizes that international thinking
in this sphere was stimulated to
the greatest possible extent
through the efforts of one man
—David Lubin. This summer, the
FAO marked the 100th anniver-
sary of the birth of this Ameri-
can Jew, who was born in Kla-
dowa, Poland.
At the age of five, Lubin, son
of Orthodox parent s, was
brought to England and, two
years later, to New York. He
grew up on the East Side and,
following the end of the Civil
War, - he - sought new fields in the
West.
Ten years later, the farming
urge took a firm hold on him.
In 1884 he went to Palestine
with his mother. Lubin was im-
bued by what he saw there, and
soon became an advocate of
Jewish colonization to Palestine.
Returning to Sacramento, he be-
gan fruit-farming in the Sacra-
mento Valley and, with Wein-
stock, soon established one of
the largest and most successful
fruit and packing companies in
California.
Hampered by the inadequate
transportation system, and the
methods of the brokers, he ac-
tively organized the Fruit Grow-
ers Convention in San Francisco,
from which roots sprang the
California Fruit Growers Ex-
change. Thus began a new
chapter in the economic history
of the West, as well as in the
marketing of farm products.
Paralleling the Exchange, Lubin
also promulgated a system of
financing - the farmer through
rural credit banks.
The turning point came when
he focused his energies and be-
liefs on the project which ab-
sorbed the rest of his life, and.
won for him the name of being
the first internationalist in ag-
ricultural statesmanship. He
sought to organize a central in-
ternational attack upon the
problem of low • prices of farm
products, which he was certain
were determined by world con-
ditions.
He was unsuccessful in inter-
esting the United States, Eng-
land -and France in initiating
the establishment of an interna-
tional Institute of Agriculture.
But in 1904, Luigi Luzzatti,
Premier of Italy and a great
economist, introduced Lubin to
King Victor Emanuel III. Within
an hour, Lubin convinced the
King. Delegations of 40 nations
assembled in Rome, and decided
on the establishment of the In- ,
ternational Institute of Agricul-
ture.
It was to become the cogent
basis of the United Nations Food
a n d Agricultural Organization
41 years later, and to become so
/ highly regarded by the members
of the latter organization that
they recently honored the cen-
tenary of David Lubin's birth
with the unveiling of a tablet
commemorating his life work.

The recent publication of an
edition. of 1,050 Talmuds in
Heidelberg is another important
step toward satisfying the re-
ligious and cultural needs of
the Jewish survivors in Ger-
many. These are not the first
books published there since
Hitler came to power. When the
German concentration camps
were liberated in 1945, the first
request of the Jewish survivors
was for newspapers and books.
The first newspaper, Unser Weg
began publication in 1945, and
soon afterward illustrated
tractates of the Talmud, with
frontespiece showing a con-
centration • camp, were pub-
lished in Landsberg. These and
other publications of the Cen-
tral Committee of Liberated
Jews have been deposited in the
Library of the Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of Re-
ligion iri Cincinnati by Rabbi
Abraham J. Klausner of Temple
Israel, Boston, until recently
provost of the College, and be-
fore that a chaplain in the U.S.
Army in Germany, where he
helped organize the Central
Committee of Liberated Jews.

Israel Police Inspector-Gerrer-
al Yechezkiel Sachar revealed
that "Sheikh Yousee Abu Gosh
is alive and in good health and
is hiding somewhere." Abu Gosh,
who aided the Sternists during
the Mandatory period and dur-
ing the Arab-Israel war, was re-
ported missing after he had
been charged with manslaughter
and released on bail. Sternist
deputies in the Knesset pressed
the government for an inquiry
and claimed that the missing
Sheikh, as well as members of
his village outside Jerusalem,
had been expelled from Israel.
