High Administrative
New Postal Regulation
Post at Pennsylvania Affects
Greeting Cards

An innovation in higher edu-
cation was announced last week,
with the appointment of Dr.
Kurt Peiser, for. 12 years execu-
tive vice president of the Phila-
delphia Federation of Jewish
Charities and Allied Jewish Ap-
peal, to the post of director of
development of the University
of Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania thus becomes
the first major institution of
higher learning to have a com-
munity planning expert work
closely with its president and
undertake broad responsibility

Richard Wheeler of the
service and information de-
partment of the Detroit
Post Office wishes to re-
mind all Detroit Jews that
under the new postal law
the following rate will ap-
ply to smaller size enve-
lopes, thereby affecting
Rosh Hashanah greeting
cards:
All envelopes that are
less than three inches in
width and less than four
inches in length are sub-
ject to the three cent mini-
mum postage rate.
Detroit Jews are urged
to make note of this rate
in order to save labor at
the post office and to pre-
vent either return of the
cards or added postage to
be charged to receivers of
mail.

high post in over-all adminis-
tration of a leading university.
Lengthy deliberations between
leaders of the Jewish communi-
ty preceded Dr. Peiser's appoint-
ment, it was disclosed. Harold
Stassen, Penn president, ap-
proached the officers of the
Federation and AJA for approv-
al of the step on the basis of the
broadest public interest.

The Jewish National Fund Council

of Detroit Extends Heartiest New

Year Greetings to Detroit Jewry .

We take this means of thanking art contributors to the Israel land redemption
fund for their generosity during 5709 and we look forward to their continued

cooperation during 5710.

The New Year Challenges Us to Make

More Rapid Strides in the Redemption

Of Large Stretches of Land in Israel

The victory of the past year does not represent a final accomplishment. The
establishment of the State of Israel and its defense constitute merely a stage in the
attainment of the final purpose. That purpose is to make room in Israel for every
Jew who needs and wishes to settle there.

Clearly, the present citizens of Israel cannot conceivably shoulder this burden
alone. They cannot be expected to bear the whole load of absorption of the masses
of Jews streaming into the country from month to month. They cannot be ex-
pected to meet the enormous cost of acquiring and reclaiming land and the costs
of settling it. That, as it has always been, is the function of the Jews of the Dias-
pora. And the. task of bringing the land into the eternal possession of the Jewish
people and making it fit for settlement remains the duty of the Jewish National
Fund. But it is now a duty which must be carted out in far greater breadth and
with far greater speed than hitherto.
