Hordes Forest to be Planted Near Jerusalem

Detroit Leader to be Honored
By Keren Kayemeth in Israel

William Hordes, chairman of
the board of the eJwish National
Fund Council of Detroit, former
president of the JNF Council
and a leader in the labor Zionist
movement, will be honored in
Israel in November with the
planting of the forest to bear
his name, on land of the Jewish
National Fund (Keren Kayemeth
LeIsrael).
A communication received re-
' cently from Walter Gross of the
Keren Kayemeth office in Jerus-

WILLIAM HORDES
alem revealed • that the JNF
Afforestation Department had
decided to plant the Hordes
Forest of 30,000 trees in the
Jerusalem Corridor, adjoining
the Defenders' Forest at the
Gate of the Valley (Shaar
HaGai-Beb-el-Wad), where the
Judean hill slopes down to the
plain.
Mr. Gross wrote : "We hope
that this location will commend
itself to our friends in Detroit.
The Hordes Forest thus will be
planted in a region where some
of the fiercest fighting raged in
1948 when our forces tried and

ultimately succeeded in breaking
open the way to Jerusalem."
Mr. Hordes will officially be
presented with a certificate sig-
nifying that the Jewish com-
munity of Detroit planted a
forest in Israel in his honor, on
the occasion of his 55th birthday.
The Hordes Forest is the fifth
forest planted by the Detroit
Jewish community, the others
being the Schaver, Schumer,
Butzel and Ehrlich Forests. It is
believed that the Hordes Forest
will have the largest number of
trees of all five.
Irving W. Schlussel, president
of the JNF Council, announced.
that the forest certificates will
be presented to Mr. Hordes at
the banquet which will conclude
the annual JNF Conference here,
at the Fort Wayne Hotel, on
Sunday evening, Nov. 6. A na-
tional JNF leader will address
the conference. Mr. Schlussel, in
a statement in behalf of the
JNF Council, expressed the joy
of Mr. Hordes' co-workers that
an historic spot was selected for
the forest. He commended Mr.
Hordes for his work for the-JNF
and pointed out that the $45,000
raised for the planting of the
Hordes Forest is a record-break-
ing sum attained in the tree
planting program in Israel.
Mr. Hordes stated that he
will retain the names of all who
honored him with contributions
to the JNF in a special Golden
Book.
