The Zionist Peace Fund

On November 5, at Hotel Statler, the Zionist Organiza-
tion of Detroit again will sponsor its annual Balfour Ball,
proceeds of which will be used to finance youth, educational
and public relations activities.
To me, the new Zionist fund is a "Peace Fund" for the
propagation of the Zionist ideal and for the advancement of
Jewish culture.
The Zionist Peace Fund this year will finance the work
of our office and the following functions whose successes are
important not only for the Zionist movement but equally as
xnuch for the entire Jewish community:
1. Scholarships for students in Israel. We already have
sent one Detroiter to Israel on a scholarship. We hope to
continue this practice, on a larger scale.
2. Youth Activities: By sponsoring the work of the
Zionist Youth Commission we are aiding Young Judaea and
other youth movements. It is one of the most urgent under-
takings and deserves wholehearted cooperation from De-
troit Jews.
3. Brandeis Camps: Each year, several Detroit youths .
receive leadership training in Brandeis Camps. We are proud
of this aspect of our work.
Balfour Ball income also finances public relations and
other activities.
„ In behalf of these causes, I hope that Detroit Jews will
give us their wholehearted cooperation by enrolling as pa-
trons for the Balfour Ball and by encouraging us in our
work.

Downtown Synagogue
Completes l0 Years of
Service to Detroiters

Completion of 10 years of re-
ligious service in the Detroit
metropolitan area is being
marked by the Downtown Syna-
gogue, of which Rabbi 'Berman
Rosenwasser is rabbi.
An honor scroll has been des-
signed for the occasion, and
friends and patrons of the syn-
agogue are invited to have their
names placed on it. Commemo-
rative memorials, in conjunction
with an illuminated memorial
tablet to be placed in the syna-
gogue, also have been designed.
Special Yizkor ..services will be
recited at 1 p.m. on Yom Kip-
pur in memory of the departed
ones whose names are listed on
the memorial tablet.
The Downtown Synagogue, at
1205 Griswold, is sponsored by
the Isaac Agree Memorial So-
ciety.

Sephardic Community Chief
Rabbi Marks 70th Year

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Chief
Rabbi Ben Zion Usiel of the
Sephardic community celebrated
his 70th birthday, Sept. 6. The
occasion was marked through-
out the country and cabled mes-
sages of congratulations poured
in from many nations.

of the first unabridged, authori-
tative translation into English of
the Talmud was announced by
Soncinco Press. The Translation
—in 34 volumes—was completed
under the editorship of Dr. I. Ep-
stein and contains a foreword by
the late British Chief Rabbi
Isaac Hertz and an epilogue by
Dr. Israel Brodie, present Chief
Rabbi of the British Empire.

Kay Invites All ZOD
Members to Meeting
Of Board Wednesday

Leon Kay, president of the
Zionist Organization of Detroit,
has issued an invitation to the
entire ZOD membership to at-.
tend the meeting of the board
of directors to be held next Wed-
nesday evening at the North-
west Hebrew Congregation.
Mr. Kay said: "I am extending
this invitation to all our mem-
bers because I believe it impera-
tive that every member .should
be made aware of our important
plans and activities in a demo-
cratic manner. I hope all mem-
bers will join with the officers
and directors of the organiza-
tion in determining our policy.

troit will endeavor to play its
part in the great drama of Isra-
el with important and fruitful
activities during the coming

Congress B and P Hears
Miller on Loyalty Bills

Byron Miller, Regional director
of the Commission of Law and
Social Action of the American
Jewish Congress, will address the
Business and Professional Chap-
ter of Detroit on "Are j.,oyalty
Bills Necessary in the United
States," Wednesday evening,
Sept. 21 at the Jewish Commun-
ity Center. Zeldon Cohen, presi-
dent of the local group, will
preside. The public is invited.

Mizrachi Groups Unite for Donor

Mrs. Phillip Fealk, chairman
of the Detroit Mizrachi Wom-
en's Council, announces that
plans, were completed this week
for the first joint donor event
to be presented by the three
Mizrachi Women's Chapters of
the city, to replace the individual
donors previously sponsored.
The event will take - place Dec.
7 at Northwest synagogue.
Mrs. Lew Friedman is general
chairman of the Mizrachi donor,
