Letter from Vienna

U.S. Jews' View of DP Status Too
Optimistic, Detroit Couple Reports

By MARGUERITE KOZENN and JULIUS CHAJES

Personal observations of the
predicament of the JeWs now re-
maining in Europe are reported
in a letter from Vienna by Mar-
guerite Kozenn and Julius Cha-
jes, Detroit's noted musical teait
now on a concert tour of Euro-
pean capitals and- Israel.
Their letter reads:
"The opinion which prevails at
present among the American
Jews, that the Displaced Per-
sons' problems have been prac-
tically solved is regrettably not
right. Although a large number
of DP camps have been closed,
it would be erroneous to believe
that there are no more refugees
in Europe who need our fullest
consideration and care.
"Even in theSe days, refugees
are pouring from the Eastern
European countries into Austria,
and the AJDC (American Joint
Distribution Committee) has the
very arduous task to find room
and board for them and also to
map out their future destina-
tions. The DPs have no legal per-
mits to stay in Austria and
therefore must be moved to an-
other country as soon as pos-
sible.
"Two weeks ago we Witnessed
the arrival of 900 refugees. They
had been crawling and fleeing
over border lines, which lately,
tragically enough, have been
mined and surrounded by
barbed wires. Thus the Iron Cur-
tain countries want to prevent
the flight of their desperate citi-
zens.
"The new arrivals were taken
to the Rothschild Hospital,
which is the largest refugee
camp in Vienna. It has a capa-
city of 800 persons under normal
conditions. On that day the
newcomers increased the num-
ber in the over-crowded and ill-
ventilated hospital to 3066. Two
years ago there were days when
8000 people found their refuge
there, sleeping in the corridors
(on the floors of course,) as well
as outside in the hospital's
court. It was at that time that
the UN Palestine Commission
visited the place and reported
about the horrible conditions
which were the result of the
continued influx of DPs. That
report has definitely helped
the pro-Jewish State opinion in
the UN.
"Among the latest refugees 90
percent are from Hungary and
the remaining 10 percent from
Czechoslovakia, Romania and
Poland.
"The present total of Jewish
DPs in Austria is about 7000. It
is most fortunate that Canada
and Australia have finally open-
ed their doors and are taking in
1800 DPs during September.
Many of the DPs will be shipped
to Israel and a great part ex-
pect to 'migrate to the States.
The AJDC would like to liqui-
date the camps by the end of
the year, but there will . always
remain a reception center for
those who continue to arrive,
leaving everything behind them
and seeking to start a new life
in a free country.
"A very spacious annex of the
Rothschild Hospital is reserved
for children only. Under the di-
Section of a very warm and kind-

hearted person, Mrs. Jutzi
Schulz, the children are getting
very fine and special care. Their
healthy and happy looks impres-,
sethus very much.
- "Another department of the
AJDC is very busy with the re-
settlement and repatriation of
Jews.who returned from Shang-
hai and other countries, and
who would like to continue
there, where they had to stop by
force 10 years ago. Immediate
help is extended to all needy up-
on their arrival. Physicians
lawyers, teachers and workers
are getting loans for their re-
establishment. A special support,
financially as well as morally, is
granted to students. Monthly
checks help them to devote
themselves exclusively to their
studies. The ORT schools give
training to some 40% of the DPs.
The funds which are supplied by
the World ORT Organization are
substantially supplemented by
the AJDC.
"We are happy to report that
the morale of the DPs is now
much higher than in previous
years. The establishment of the
State of Israel has given them
courage and faith in better days
to come, when they too will par-
ticipate in the enjoyable things
which a free and democratic
world offers."
