LISTENING

Returning from Israel after an
11-week tour of the land in a car
he brought with him from De-
troit, Charlie Wolok, former
treasurer of the Zionist Organ-
ization of Detroit, speaks with
elation about his impressions of
the land, the people and its gov-
ernment.
Wolok said that criticisms
leveled at Israel in the main are
unjustified. He said that the
established government sincerely
and devotedly strives to over-
come difficulties in welcoming
tens of thousands of newcomers
and battles against great odds
to accomplish its tasks.
The condition of the new-
comers is frightful, Wolok said,
but it can be solved provided
American Jews send the means
for reconstruction work.
He said that those who say
there is no religion in Israel and
that ka.shrut is not observed are
spreading libels. He said that

IT WAS A DREAM finally
come true when Mr. and Mrs.
Joseph Abrams reached Califor-
nia to spend a lot of time with
son, Herman, and his family
. . Years of hard work had
preceded this trip and Mr.
Abrams had made plans for an
extended visit . . . As mother
and dad stood gazing at the
broad Pacific, Herman at their
side, and marveling at its beauty,
Mrs. Abrams remarked that it
was twice as big as the Atlantic
. . . Mr. Abrams shaded his eyes
against the sun, squinted at the
horizon for a minute, then re-
luctantly agreed, "Yeah, I guess
it is Molly."

H. W. ZIMMERMAN was elect-
ed for third straight term as
treasurer of National Bnai Brith
Bowling Tourney . . . Harry
Kurzman and Harry Schwartz
were selected to board of gover-
nors . . Next year's tourna-
ment, which opens in February,
will again be sectional . . . with
teams rolling in five areas . .
Last year, only three sections
were used, but vast growth of
nationals will call for the con-
venience of added areas.

MISCONCEPTION IN the com-
munity has been formed by some
as to facilities to be available at
the new combined Jewish Com-
munity Center—JWV Home on
Davison and Holmur . . . Neither
a swimming pool nor a gymna-
sium are included in the plans
... The Woodward Ave: building
must remain as the only Center
for such facilities.

Mrs. Walter Bernstein for con-

ports, the Detroit Tigers are

der Henry's nose.
MORRIE GRUSKIN, bossman
at Club Main Street, and Caterer
Al Rosenberg, are so certain that

have already begun making
elaborate plans for a huge vic-
tory dinner to be held in the
ballroom of Hotel Ft. Wayne .. .
Preparations call for one of the
most. lavish affairs of its type
ever seen in Detroit.

DR. A. S. PEARLMAN had fin-
ished filling five teeth for a
woman patient and told her he
would polish them . . . He
cleaned each tooth and then
handed her a mirror so she
could see for herself the spar-
kling difference . . . When he
had cleaned the last tooth, Dr.
Pearlman asked her how she
liked the way her teeth now
looked . . . "Teeth?" she asked
in somewhat puzzled wonder.
"Oh, I see what you mean. I
guess you'd better give me that
mirror again so I can see how
they look."

Ain Hashophet, the colony
named in honor of the late
Justice Brandeis, was portrayed
by Wolok as the finest colony he
visited in Israel. He brought
greetings from the Haggais of
Detroit who now are settled in
Ain Hashophet. •
While in Israel, Wolok saw
many Detroiters, including Rabi
Isaac Stollman, Mrs. H. C. Brod-
er, Mrs. R. Davidson and others.
He said that Rabbi Stollman left
a deep impression with a sermon
he delivered in the synagogue
of one of the colonies.
