Ceremonial Objects
Of European Jewry
To Be Shown in U.S.

Some 3,500 ceremonial objects
looted by the Nazis from syna-
gogues and Jewish homes in
Europe between 1938 and 1945
are en route to this country for
re-distribution to Jewish ma-
seums, synagogues and commun-
ity centers in the Western Hem-
isphere. They will be stored in
the, Jewish Museum of New York.
These treasures, of great his-
toric and artistic value, include
silverware and textiles and are
only a part of the collection
which was recovered by Allied
military authorities after V-E
Day. They were stored, 'together
with hundreds of thousands of
Jewish books, as unidentifiable
Jewish property, in the depot of
Offenbach, under the guardian-
ship of American authorities in
Germany.
At the end of the war, Prof.
Salo W. Baron took the initia-
tion in setting up a comission of
leading Jewish scholars and edu-
cators in America to investigate
the difficult problem of the sal-
vage of cultural Jewish property
in Europe. In 1947, Jewish Cul-
tural Reconstruction, Inc., was
founded under the chairman-
ship of Prof. Baron, for the pur-
pose of tracing, restitUting and
allocating Jewish books and
ceremonial objects which had
been stolen by. the Nazis.
Jewish Cultural Reconstruc-
tion, Inc., receives its operational
funds from the American Joint
Distribution Committee and the
Jewish Agency for Palestine.
