N.Y. Bank Transmits
Money to Israel Free

NEW YORK (JTA) - Henry
Morgenthau, Jr., chairman of
the board of directors of the
Modern Industrial Bank, an-
nounced that his bank will
transmit money from the United
States to Israel free of charge,
regardless of the size of the
sums involved.
This is the first time in the
history of banking in New York
that a bank offered to transmit
money abroad without charging
for the operation, Morgenthau
emphasized. Individuals resid-
ing outside of New York can
take advantage of the service by
mailing a check to the Modern
industrial Bank which will
transmit money from the United
States to Israel free of charge,
regardless of the • size of the
sums involved.
This is the first time in the
history of banking in New York
that a bank has offered to
transmit money abroad without
charging for the operation, Mor-
genthau emphasized. Individuals
residing outside of New York
can take advantage of the ser-
vice by mailing a check to the
Modern Industrial Bank which
will transmit the full sum to
Israel to be paid there by the
Anglo-Palestine Bank, he de-
clared.

Declared Invalid

BALTIMORE - (JTA)-A 95-
year-old Maryland law requiring
public officials to swear to be-
lief in the Christian religion was
declared invalid by Circuit Court
Judge Charles Marbury, of Up-
per Marlboro, who upheld the
claim of J. Milton Stanford,
councilman-elect of the town of
Brentwood, to take office with-
out taking the customary oath
on the grounds that he is a
member of the pantheist reli-
gion.
Earlier, Stanford was told he
would not be seated by the
Brentwood town council when
he refuSed. to -take the oath
which. contains the clause, "I
believe in the Christian religion."
A pantheist believes the universe
is God but does not accept the
doctrine of future rewards and
punishments.
