Synagogue Leaders to Appeal
For JNF at Tisha b'Ab Rites
Construction Begins on Temple
Israel Building; Fund Drive On
All Detroit Orthodox and Conservative congregations
will hear appeals for the Jewish. National Fund at Tisha
b'Ab services, Wednesday evening, Aug. 3, and Thursday
morning Aug. 4.
Irving W. Schlussel, president of the Jewish National
Fund Council, issued an appeal for liberal contributions to
the Jewish National Fund. He
pointed out that more than 80,-
000 newcomers to Israel are liv-
ing in temporary camps and de-
clared that large sums are need-
ed to settle them on the soil, to
provide homes for them and to
assure their speedy integration
into Israel's economy.
According to Arthur Shutkin,
executive director of the JNF in
Detroit, JNF representatives will
speak in the following snya-

Chief Rabbinate Rules
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—
Neither Tisha B'AB, which
marks the destruction of the
Temple, nor any other fast
days in the Jewish calendar
have been abolished as a re-
sult of the establishment of
the Jewish state, the Chief
Rabbinate of Israel ruled fol-
lowing a query by the rabbin-
ate of Turkey.

Active construction work has
begun on the building of Temple
Israel at Manderson and Mer-
ton.
The Lerner-Linden 'Construc-
tion. Co. was awarded the con-
tract for construction. Comple-
tion of the building is expected
within a year's time. The archi-
tect is William E. Kapp.
Sol. R. Colton, chairman of
the building fund campaign, has
mobilized his workers to visit
every member of the congrega-
tion to secure funds necessary
to meet the cost of the structure
within the year of building op-
erations. Serving as co-chair-
men • with Colton are Jacob A.
Citrin, Maxwell E. Emmer, Ar-
thur J. Hass, Jack 0. Lefton,
and Rabbi Leon Fram, ex-of-
ficio.
The new Temple follows mod-
em trends in synagogue archi-
tecture. It is designed with a
circular auditorium, flanked by
an oblong structure which will
house the administrative offices,
the Youth Center Hall and
other rooms for social, educa-
tional and communal purposes.
