Detroit Rabbi Fulfills Mitzvah
Of Pilgrimage to Israeli State

By RABBI ISSAC STOLLMAN

The commandment of pilgrim-
age to Jerusalem has been per-
ennially a mitzva of great em-
otional appeal. A provision for
pilgrims has it that one who is
blind in one eye need not make
the journey. One of my prayers
before departing for Israel was
that I see with both eyes, as an
impartial, three-dimensional ob-
server. I trust that my prayer
was not in vain.
Touring the land from length
to breadth one can find no place
not enshrined by the miracles
of courage and bravery.
From Rehovoth to Har Tov,
one drives along a new road
hewn in six weeks through rock
and desert sands, marvels of Is-
raeli accomplishment.
Jerusalem can tell a story not
only of hunger and suffering
but of superlative heroism.
Safed, the holy, mystic city of
Israel with its exotic past, was
a prominent spearhead of the
Arab strategy.
Whoever w ould understand
the obdurate defense of the set-
tlers must visit the Negba, Saad
and Beayros Yitzchoh where no
site is unfurrowed by the ravages
of war.
Part of the road from Jeru-
salem to Tel Aviv is littered with
burnt out skeletons of trucks
and jeeps which carried food to
beleagured areas. A reverent
shudder fills the passerby as he
follows this road. One feels that

the ancient curse of the Galuth r
of sheep led to slaughter, has
been completely broken.
With tight lips and tear brim-
med eyes I stood among the
mourners at Tel Aviv when the
ashes of 200,000 martyrs of the
European crematoriums w e r e
led through the streets with an
honor guard of Israeli soldiers.
One may drive past Mishmar
HaShiva, near Rishon Le Tsion,
a monument to seven heroes of
the mandate period, when the
British disarmed these young
men and turned them over to
the Arabs to be brutally mas-
sacred.
The war demonstrated that
the victory was won not only
through individual and com-
munal heroism but through the
foresight of the strategic loca-
tion of the Kibbutzim of every
shade.
