17-Year-Old Wing Humane Act Award

year-old Richard Rose of 2505

Boston this „week was awarded
the National Humane Act Award
for 1949 of the American Vet-
erinary Medical Association.
Richard and Jiggs have been
pals for more than 15 years,
since the boy was 18 months
old and the dog six weeks. Two
years ago the terrier began to go
blind.
When veterinarians told Rich-
ard that a difficult eye opera-
tion might save the dog's sight,
he told the doctor to operate
and gave up all his activities
outside of high school to devote
himself to nursing his pet.
The operation was not suc-
cessful, but Dick was determin-
ed to provide as much comfort
as possible for Jiggs. He invent-

things. Veterinarians think the
boy's invention will prolong the
active lives of other blind dogs.
The citation which went with
the AVMA award reads:
"This certificate is awarded
to Richard Rose of Detroit, who
against heavy odds ingeniously
and with sustained self-sacrifice
and devotion warded off suffer-
ing and extended the life of his
childhood companion, Jiggs, a
16-year-old blind, invalid Bos-
ton terrier, thus demonstrating
the humane ideal of gentleness
and mercy."
