Editor, The Jewish News:
Both Rabbi Abram M. Aron-
son, at the recent Bretton
Woods conference of rabbis, and
the editorial writer in the July
8 issue of The Jewish News have
given spotlight publicity to the
National Conference of Chris-
tians and Jews . . . They criti-
cize it as merely a "good-will
movement."
These criticisms reveal a
woefully • inadequate knowledge
of the National Conference. The
actual field of the National Con-
ference is education — in the
largest sense of the word.
Every available method for
educating 148,000,000 Americans
is utilized to advance under-
standing among Protestants,
Catholics and Jews. Using truth
to combat lies, promoting good-
will to offset hate, America's
vast and varied forms of com-
munication are a frontline at-
tack in spreading the spirit of
Brotherhood. Throughout the
year, the National Conference
conducts its campaign against
bigotry through newspapers,
radio, television, motion pic-
tures, advertising, magazines,
bOoks, pamphlets, speakers and
recordings.
Over the years, the National
Conference has pioneered in
reaching all people who influ-
ence the growth of children—
teachers, school administrators,
social workers, civic and welfare
leaders, parents and clergymen.
To make these educators more
effective allies, the National
Conference is sponsoring a num-
ber of projects designed (1) to
train and enlighten them in the
problems of human relations;
(2) to teach them sound meth-
ods for influencing and pre-
paring the children in demo-
cratic living; and (3) to provide
them with adequate textbooks
and other necessary teaching
materials. Included among these
projects are workshops and
training courses for teachers;
human relatiOns science centers
• in universities; institutes on in-
tergroup relations; manuals for
educators; intergroup relations
programs in elementary and
secondary schools; courses in
teachers' colleges; professional
intergroup training.
The National C on f er en c e
works extensively with Protes-
tant, Catholic and Jewish re-
ligious organizations. Some of
thee- program highlights are:
Sunday school and youth study
Materials, supplied to thousands
of churches and synagogues;
training religious educators in
_intergroup problems; youth con-
ferences; Religious News Serv-
ice, to supply hundreds of daily
newspapers, magazines a n d
radio stations with nevus and
pictures of our religious groups;
Religious Book Week.
The National Conference
works with fraternal, civic, wel-
fare, educational, religious, la-
bor, veteran and other com-
munity organizations to help
make democratic goodwill a
pattern of American living.
• During the war, the Army and
Navy commended the National
Conference for the instruction
given to military personnel in
promoting better intergroup re-
lations. NoW, in peacetime, this
store of information and tech-
nical know-how is being made
available to business and in-
dustry: . Prejudice results in an
economic loss of 25 billion dol-
lars a year. Accordingly, the
Conference is setting up human
relations courses in factories,
plants and department stores
with the view of lessening inter-
group hostilities and frictions.
Should not Jews and Gentiles
alike heartily suport an organ-
ization which for 20 years has
devoted its efforts to their com-
mon welfare as Americans?

Zorn, whose conversion to Catholicism some years back while
holding the rank of chief rabbi of Rome was no surprise to those
who had been observing his spiritual decay, is running true to
the form of the apostate . . . He has played a leading role in the
current Vatican policy concerning the internationalization of
Jerusalem and is said to be more than a mere foe of Zion . . .
Before publication of the recent Vatican en hcyclical .on the status
of the Holy City he was busy studying the history of Jerusalem
and its religious significance . . . We wonder whether while pre-
occupying himself with the task he took note of one of the most
famous historic ironies—that Jerusalem has been won back for
Christendom by a man who felt the lash of church excommtni-
cation . . . He was Emperor Frederick . . . So loathed was this
man by the church that when he was in the midst of negotiating
for Jerusalem with the Sultan in 1229, the Pope issued an edict
barring him and all Christians from affixing their signatures
to the Treaty of Jaffa . . . The diplomacy behind the ban was as
clear then as is the motivation now behind the opposition to the
inclusion of Jerusalem within Israel's orbit . . . We cannot resist
recalling at this time, when the Christian world appears so self-
righteous in• its so-called equalitarian demands on the Holy City,
that the man who gained the city for them accomplished the feat
despite and not because of Papal authorities who speak of Jeru-
salem with such possessiveness today . . . For further informa-
tion ox., the subject we would advise the meshumed to read David
G. Einstein's "Emperor Frederick."
Educational Alliance, one of the oldest Jewish institutions on
New York's 'East Side, is about to become a non-sectarian insti-
tution . . . Change of population trend is said to be responsible
for the contemplated move . . , Years ago the Alliance synagogue
was one of the most famous in the country . . . It was graced by
the incomparable gold-tongued orator Zvi Masliansky . . . Now
the synagogue is closed down.
Goethe's bicentennial anniversary is being widely celebrated
in this and other countries . . . His genius of course is beyond
denial even though there are some who are inclined to the be-
lief that his greatness has been exaggerated ... As Jews we can-
not give moral approbation to the German poet who struggled
for a life time with Jew hate ... Goethe had praise for the bibli-
cal Jew who existed only in the Bible, as the great Yiddish poet.
Jacob Glatstein has recently observed, but he had no use for the
living Jew of his time . . . In his ideal state Jews would be felt
only by their absence . . . We hate to mar a literary holiday . .
But we would be derelict in duty if we did not remind the Goethe
celebration sponsors that their hero was quite an anti-semite.
