IDC—Magic Letters

Italy Is Last Stop

For Israel-Bound

Jewish Refugees

Special to The Jewish News
By DR. RUTH GRUBER

ROME. ITALY—Thousands of
tired, exhausted, homeless Jews
now are pouring into Italy out
of Europe and North Africa,
sailing to Israel, leaving their
old life of pogroms, persecutions
and gas chambers. The Bari sea-
port in southeastern Italy has
become a new narrow funnel for
Jews running for their lives in
1949.
JDC—three magic letters here
—is operating camps for Jews in
flight. I visited these camps all
week. as Tripolitanians arrived
—exhausted from their long
trek. covered with dirt, bare-
foot and in rags. The sick ones
remain in Italy until they are
cured by JDC doctors.
One of the refugees said to
me: "The sickness and the per-
secution is ending for us at last
. . Now we are going to forget
the bloodshed and to start life
as human beings, as Jews among
Jews. Please give, thanks to
American Jews and tell them
well never forget them."

Rhea Cashman of the World-
Wide Travel Bureau, 215 Ma-
jestic Bldg., WO. 2-3368, an-
nounced this week that a special
service is available for those de-
siring to go to Israel for the
High Holy Days by boat.

mer Begensfjord, will leave New
York on Sept. 6 and will arrive
in Haifa on Sept. 22, remaining

return trip to New York on Oct.
4.
As a means of solving the
housing and food problem, trav-
elers will be able to remain on
the ship, which will serve as
their hotel, and still will be able
to tour the country. Tourists will
be able to arrange for one-way
or return trips.
The return trip will cost $565
and there will be a charge of
$10 a day for room and meals
while _in Israel. On the trip to
and from Israel, the boat will
stop in Cannes, Naples, Genoa,
Lisbon and Ponta del Gada.
Further information can be
secured from Miss Cashman,
who also is making arrange-
ments for trips to Israel for
those desiring to go by plane by
the Air France route.
