of America, in New York, were, left to right: BARUCH ZUCK-

Jews in Polish Communist Party
Urge Strong Stand Against Zionism

TEL AVIV—(JTA)—The Jew-
ish section of the Polish Com-
munist Party has urged the
Cominform to take a strong
stand against Zionist activities
in countries where the Com-
munist parties are affiliated
with the Cominform, it was
learned here today.
• In a memorandum prepared
for the forthco.ming session of
the Cominform, the Jewish sec-
tion of the Polish Party recom-
mended reversion to the Old
Communist position of "uncom-
promising opposition to Zionist
aims and activities. The memo-
randum, whose contents were
partially disclosed here, strongly
advises that Soviet satellite
countries outlaw all Zionist
propaganda and prohibit emi-
gration of Jews to Israel.
1 Some of these steps have al-
ready been taken by the Polish
Government. Zionist groups
have been forced to disavow
connections with world Zionist
organizations, ZioniSt youth
training camps have been ban-
ned, and kindergarten and ele-
mentary schools where Jewish
children were taught Hebrew
have been closed. One Zionist
weekly published in Poland, al-
though not suppressed, has been
forced to publish Communist
propaganda.
The major consequence of
Cominform adoption of the
recommendations made by the
Jewish section of the Polish
party would be denial of the
right to emigrate to more than
half a million Jews still in east-
ern Europe. Such action would
also have internal reprecussions
in Israeal, where Communist
groups are .already splintering
over the attitude of Soviet sat-
ellites toward Jewish emigration.

Poles Hit Underground
WARSAW (JTA)—Polish bor-
der police reported liquidation
of a "big organization" engaged
in smuggling Jews and others
out of the country.
The announcement followed
the seizure of a group of Jews
and six Poles as they sought to
cross the Polish-Slovak frontier.
A number of arrests were made,
according to the announcement,
of people who provided way
stations along the underground
railway and sheltered the refu'
gees. A number of these were in
the town of Walbrzych. They
included the rabbi of the town,
Rabbi Nisan Gesang.
An appeal to world Jewry to
send a qualified rabbi to con-
duct the Yeshiva at Lodz was
made by Rabbi David Kahane,
chief Jewish chaplain of the
Polish Army, at the annual
meeting here of the Association
of Rabbis in Poland. Rabbi G.
Efrusi, representative of the
Chief Rabbi's office of Israel,
promised to seek help on his re-
turn home and try to send a
suitable rabbi to Lodz for the
post.
Rabbi Kahane said that all
appeals for a Yeshiva rector had
so far been made in vain, adding
that there was also a lack of
sufficient rabbis in Poland to
meet the needs of Jews in this

country. He asserted that it was
the task of the rabbis to con-
tinue the tradition of Jewish
religious life in Poland while,
thanks to the aid of the Polish
Government, the Association of
Rabbis would carry on their
religious work unhampered. For
that reason, the chaplain said,
the Association supports the
"victory of the Polish People's
Demodracy."
Rabbi Efrusi promised to in-
form the Jewish community in
Israel about the unhampered
development of religious life in
Poland and assured the rabbis
that Israel would always work
with Poland toward peace. A
tribute of one minute's silence
was given to those who fell in
the defense of Israel.
The canning of kosher meat
for. Israel will begin here soon
under the supervision of a mem-
ber of the Israeli rabbinate, it
was announced at the meeting.
Rabbi G. Efrusi of Israel, who
will supervise the canning pro-
gram, spoize at the meeting on
the procedures for freezing
meats in accordance— with
Kashruth laws.
Polish Chief Rabbi David Ka-
hane told the meeting that 65
Jewish religious communities
are now functioning in Poland.
He also welcomed a recent dec-
laration by Minister of Culture
M. Wolski guaranteeing religious
freedom in this country. Rabbi
Kahane reported that the As-
sociation of Jewish Cooperatives
has instructed its branches
throughout Poland to accord
opportunities to religious Jews
to observe the Sabbath. Where
no Jewish cooperatives exist, he
added. religious Jews are free to
organize their own cooperatives
with Saturday as the day of
rest.
The meeting also heard a re-
port that preparations are now
under way to retrieve Scrolls of
the Law which have been kept
in the building of the Jewish
Historical Society under condi-
tions "amounting to desecration."

WARSAW— maj. - Gen. T.
Boettcher. Gestapo commandant
in the Radom district of Po-
land from 1942-45 was sentenced
to hang by the Radom District
Court for directing the massa-
cre of 380,000 Jews and 85,000
Poles during the war. The Nazi
general sent more than 160,000
of his victims to forced labor
camps in Germany.
During the trial, a spokesman
for the Jewish Historical Insti-
tute testified that only 20,000 of
a pre-war total of 400,000 Jews
in. the Radom area survived the
war. Many Jewish witnesses were
called to present evidence dur-
ing the ten-day trial.

AJC, Labor Group
Coordinate Activities

NEW YORK—The Jewish La-

bor Committee and the Amevi.-
can Jewish Committee a n -
nounced a national agreement
for* the purposes of effectively
coordinating the activities of
both organizations for work
with labor in the field of im-
proved human relations.
This agreement comes as a
result of intensive discussion
and conference instituted by
the executive committee of the
National Community Relations
Advisory Council, national co-
ordinating body for Jewish
agencies in America.

ist. However, recently a speaker
at a meeting of the Soviet Asso-
ciation branded Zionism a "re-
actionary movement." Since
that time many of the Jews
have felt that the Tientsin Jew-
ish club "Kunst," which has
been pro-Zionist in orientation,
will either be forced to change
its emphasis or close down.

Communists in Argentina
Start Fund-Raising Drive

BUENOS AIRES (JTA)—Jew-
ish Communists in Argentina

have started a separate fund-
raising drive, in rivalry to the
United Campaign of the Jewish
community. T h e Communist
fund is for "direct aid" for
needy Jews in Europe and Israel.
Most of the Argentine Jews,
however, back the United Cam-
paign. Jewish newspapers, with
the exception of the Communist
daily Haint, refuse to accept
advertisements for the Com-
munist fund ,drive.
Dr. Itzhak Gruenbaum, for-
mer Minister of the Interior and
an Israeli General Zionist lead-
er, who has spent three weeks
here in behalf of the United
Campaign, flew to Rio de Ja-
neiro on his way back to Israel

from reliable sources reveal that
new arrests of Zionist leaders
took place in Hungary following

The reports estimated that at
least 200 Zionists were arrested

were placed in a concentration
camp near Pest. The arrests
took place following the escape
of a number of Jews who were
subpoenaed as "agents of Zion-
ist fascism," one report added.
