THE JEWISH NEWS-15 Friday, July 8, 1949 American-Israeli Line Acquires Two Ships TEL AVIV-(JTA)--The Zim shipping company will soon add two ships to the American Is- raeli line, with a tonnage of 10,500 each. By agreement with the United States Maritime Commission, through which the ships are be- ing acquired, the new vessels will carry 50 percent United States loan gciods for the next two or three years. The price for carrying loan goods will be 10 percent of cargo value. Zim is negotiating for the acquisition of three freighters for the Medi- terranean line, one of which would carry fruit. Negotiations are also under way for a passenger and freight carrier. A total of six to seven million dollars from the Export- Import Bank loan will be spent for shipping. In the next three years it is expected that enough trained Israeli seamen will be available to man the fleet. Two Rabbis Participate In Chaplains' Mission WASHINGTON, D. C.- Rabbi Leon S. Lang of Congregation Beth El, Philadelphia, and Rab- bi Leo Jung of the Jewish Cen- ter, New York, are among two groups of civilian clergymen to embark Wednesday,,July 13, for visits to military chaplains in the European and Far Eastern Commands of the U. S. Depart- ment of the Army. Rabbi Lang, who will be among the European Command Mission Group, represents the Conservative rabbinate, a n d Rabbi Jung, who will go to the Far East, represents the Ortha- ■ dox. The Jewish clergymen, who will join ministers and priests of other faiths in Washington July 12 for preparatory briefing, were invited by the Chiefs of Chaplains of the Army, Navy and Air Force, "to meet with Military chaplains overseas to conduct spiritual conferences and devotional exercises." Esta, born in a DP camp, a n d h e r parents, veterans of sev- ESTA, eral concentra- tion camps, came on the Army transport Marine Jumper, which brought in 884 DPs of all races and creeds, 283 of them Jews. HIAS, which cooperates with the IRO. in facilitating the immigra- tion of DPs to the United States under the provisions of the DP Act of 1948, is currently seeking $5,005,000, the largest budget in its 64-year history, in order to carry on effectively and speed- ily its urgent work of rescue.' UN Council Views Plan To Aid Stateless Persons • LAKE SUCCESS, (JTA)-The Secretary General of the United Nations placed before the Eco- nomic and Social Council a far- reaching program of positive recommendations for the im- mediate alleviation of the plight of stateless persons. The report, a two-volume study of the problem, paved the way for long-range interna- tional action on statelessness along two major lines - its eventual abolition and, pending that, the improvement of the status of stateless persons. The study and recommendations were made by the Secretariat's staff on the request of the UN Economic and Social Council. Diversion of Children's Fund to Arabs Criticized LONDON, (JTA) -The diver- sion of funds intended for Eu- ropean refugee children exclu- sively by Foreign Minister Ern- est Bevin to aid for Arab refu- gees, only some of whom are children, vvas criticized at a meeting of the Board of Depu- ties of British Jews by F. M. Landau. who called the. diver- sion a "mean and shabby trick." Landau expressed regret that Sir Stafford Cripps, Chancellor of the Exchequer, had supported Bevin in this action. Harpo Marx: "Gossip has been defined as the art of saying nothing in a way that leaves practically nothing unsaid." 'Go Fight City Hall' : Charming New Novel Ethel Rosenberg's first novel, "Go Fight City Hall," (published by Simon & Schuster, New York) may well become a sensation and is certain to attract wide in- terest. It is the story of . Brooklyn Jewish families, of landlords and tenants, trips to the Bronx Zoo and a wholesome love affair between Hannah and Howie. What's the meaning of the title? If you get angry, or wish to wave someone off, or desire to thumb your nose at an ad- versary, you say it and you real- ly mean: - It is no use knocking your head against a stone wail. You can't win." In any event, that's the explanation appearing on the jacket. Emphasizing the Brooklynese- Yiddish dialect, Mrs. Rosenberg apparently knows her characters and in a sense imitates She- lem Aleichem. The humor in the book is wholesome and has' good punch. The characters are lovable and the • test of the books' power is in its being able .to hold the reader glued to many a chapter for development in the simple ..story. Uncle Julius Pasternak is the pivot in the story. He introduced Hannah to Howie and plays a part in the fulfillment of the romance. Landlord Kugel is the hard man who strikes bargains his way. The entire story runs smooth- ly and all ends well. Unlike most dialect stories, "Go Fight City Hall" is not offensive. Those who know Pitkin Avenue will relish it. But it is a novel that will please all who enjoy a good laugh and a well-told tale. • NEW YORK, (JTA) - More than 151,000 Jewish refugee im- migrants entered Israel and 9,400 came to the United States with the assistance of agencies of the United Jewish Appeal during the first six months of 1949, Henry Morgenthau; Jr. dis- closed in a report to the UJA national campaign executive committee.
