JACK MANN, of the comedy
team Benson & Mann that
closed, last week, • at the Fox
heater, resembles movie star
Van Johnson ... He was stand-
- ng in front of Hotel Detroiter
hen a young girl rushed out of
he drug store and eagerly
ushed a piece of paper in his
face . . . asking for his auto-
graph . . . Looking at his sig-
ature, she asked, "Aren't you
an Johnson?" "No," he an-
wered, "I'm Jack Mann." . . .
isappointed ' but thoroughly
pologetic, the girl said, "Oh,
'm so sorry, Mr. Mann. Here's
a piece of your shirt back! . . .
While he was writing, she had
cut off a portion of the polka
'dot sport shirt he had bought
only that same day ... "I don't
know where she got the scis-
sors," said Jack, "but I lose
More shirts that way!"
BENSON & MANN made a
it here while on the Frankie
Carle show . . . and will prob-
ably be back in fall . . . to ap-
ear for the lucky club owner
ho gets their sterling act . . .
Among the spots trying to get
'n line are Ted Lipsitz, Sid's
unge Cafe and the Elmwood
'n Windsor • .. Irving Benson's
family name is Wishnew, and it
as Jack Mossman before be-
ing changed to Mann . .. Both
boys are from New York and
have been in show business
practically their entire lives
, . Jack is a former "hoofer"
'and attended Assumption Col-
lege at one time . . . Back in
1933 he sold papers on the cor-
er of Cass and Temple.

BEING A PAPPY, HIMSELF,
Walter Klein, assistant director
Of the Jewish Community Coun-
cil, gets an added kick out of a
story recently told to him . . .
A father was out walking with
his son. The boy said, "Daddy,
what is electricity?" "Well, now,
really don't know," said the
' 'ather. "I never knew much
bout electricity. All I know
bout it is that it makes things
..un." A little farther on, the boy
asked, "Daddy, how does the
gasoline make the automobiles
go?" "Well, I don't know. I don't
know much about motors." Sev-
eral more questions followed
with much the same result . . .
until at last, the boy said, "Gee,
I hope you don't mind my ask-
ing so many questions?" "Not
at all, son," replied the father,
"you go right ahead and ask.
How else will you ever learn
anything!"

• SHOWING MADE BY ladi 'n
lassies in recent "Gotta Dance"
revue by Julie Adler, was won-
derful entertainment . . . and
the moms and dads in the
Crowded Art Institute auditori-
um buzzed with self praises of
'That's my son!" and "That's
my daughter!" . • . Julie and
her staff must be commended
for a masterful job in weaving
so fine a show that included so
many youngsters . • . ranging
upwards in age from three-
year-olds . . . The revue was
built around the older students
and instructors . . . who did
much more than was expected
of them . . . and constituted
three hours of beautifully cos-
tumed presentation by a cast of
about 300.
F.,h IT IS HARD TO conceive how
Julie and her staff did what
hey did with such little kiddies
. . One observer remarked,
'Why, they're just babies!" .. .
e show was held on Sunday
and Monday nights . . . We saw
r
the latter performance . . . and
although it was ardent that the
tots were tired . . . they did
their routines like little troup-
ers! . . . Not enough can be
•
about the fine job -done by
talented stars like 15-year-old.
dancer Jerry Hershenson, lovely
songstress Sharon Sklar, Rita
Langdorf, Lois Gendel, Anita
Silverman, Shirlee Applebaum,
Ralph Fisch and so many many
more who also deserve individ-
ual mention . . . The crowning
presentation of the entire show
was so near-professional that
nary a person in the vast audi-
ence could believe it was any-
thing but that . . . "It was a
"Rhapsody in Blue" routine .. .
with Julie Adler and ballet
choreographer Pat Loring lead-
ing a truly magnificent choral
dance portrayal of a tap versus
ballet challenge.

ered in a hurry that all is not

more out of me in a half-hour
than playing an entire evening

changed! . . . But it's thrilling
to know that out there people
are actually watching every

RUBY SKLAR, American Ad-
vertising chieftain, thinks
there's nobody like Sam Gold-
wyn . . . and makes a hobby out
of collecting stories about the
MGM producer ... and innocent
Goldwyn sayings such ,as, "Any-
one who goes to see a psychia-
trist should have his head ex-
amined!"
WHEN GARY COOPER had
finished making a certain picture
for Goldwyn, another producer,
exercised the option which he
held on Cooper's services . . .
Goldwyn called Stromberg on
the phone, and in an aggrieved
tone, said, "It isn't that I mind
your taking Cooper. But you
could have been nicer about it.
You could at least have called
me up and said, 'Sam, I need
Cooper right away, if it doesn't
interfere with your plans.' Then,
I'd have said, no."
SEEMS THAT ALMOST every-
time Goldwyn speaks, according
to Ruby, he accidently says
something that is destined for
world note . .. In a talk to his
employees, he started off with,
"Gentlemen, I want you to know
that I am always right—but I
am never wrong." . . . And
when he decided not to join a
certain undertaking by several
Hollywood producers, Goldwyn
said, "Gentlemen, include me
out!"
IRO Staff Reveals
Anti-Jewish Feeling,
Senate Report Shows
WASHINGTON — (JTA) — A
spokesman for the International
Refugee Oragnization declined
comment on a charge in a Sen-
ate report that "there was con-
siderable a n ti -Jewish feeling
among a number of the staff
members." The charge was
made in a report on IRO opera-
tions released by the Senate
committee on expenditures in
the . Executive Department.
Sen. Owen Brewster of Maine
first threw light on the report
in a debate on the IRO. He
quoted a section which stated
that a "top-level official, follow-
ing the position of his govern-
ment, maintained there should
be no further IRO movement of
Jews to Palestine until a com-
plete solution and agreement
was . reached between the Arab
countries and the new state of
Israel, with UN approval.',!
Such . Israeli-Arab agreement
has not been reached, Sen.
Brewster said, "as a result in
substantial measure—if we be-
lieve current reports—of the
intervention of our own State
Department to block 'the agree-
ment which was reached_ be-
tween Egypt and Israel as to
that situation."
The committee report also
said : "The subcommittee learn-
ed that considerable internal
conflict arose in connection with
the movement of Jewish dis-
placed persons to Israel." It
added that "as staff discussions
developed, it became quite clear
that there was con sider able
anti-Jewish feeling among a
number of the staff members."
