Detroiters Invest in MPAL

Jewish Center Activities

Entries for the second annual
SUMMER MARATHON SWIM,
this year for 10 miles, to be
covered from Sunday, June 26,
to Thursday, Aug. 26, are being
accepted by Manny Ratner, su-
pervisor of swimming. at the
Center. The contest is open to
Center members of all age
groups. The distances for which
credit will be given on a weekly
basis will range from 1/4 mile per
day the first, week to one mile
per day the last week. Entrants-
will be considered contestants at
the completion of the first mile.

The Center's TEEN AGE
SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS
were conducted Tuesday eve-
ning, June 7. Eight races were
held, resulting in the following
teen-agers w inn in g Center

40-yards' freestyle: 1. Stanley Wandruff ;
2. Harold Blacher. Winning time:
:21.0. which breaks old pool record of
:21.2 set by Richard Savage in
1940.

2. Bob Oglesby. Winning time: :13.4.
20-yards' breakstroke: 1. Blonde; 2. Jack
Koblin. Winning time: :12.0. which
breaks old pool record of :12.4 set
by Koblin.
60-yards' medley relay: 1. "All-Star" team

Bobby Marans.

Canner, Joe Cohen and Oglesby.

At the annual AMPAL (American Pales-
tine Trading. Corporation) dinner at Hotel
Statler, _June 9, prominent Detroiters pledged
support to efforts for economic development
of Israel by purchasing the new AMPAL de-,
bentures. Robert St. John, noted author,
Abraham Dickenstein, AMPAL director, Mor-
ris Lieberman,. Samuel Rattner, AMPAL field
director, and Harry Schumer were the
speakers.

Daily dips in a pool with basic
floating principles for the
youngsters, advanced swimming
techniques for the older chil-
dren, regular Red Cross tests,
water games, sports and compe-
tition meets, under the super-

vision of qualified water person-
nel, are all part of the AQUA-
TIC PROGRAM for the three
summer day camps of the Jew-
ish Community Center.
Camp H a b o n i m, the junior
day camp which meets at the
Aaron DeRoy Memorial Build-
ing, will have Ada Uronovitz and
Joe Schore assisting Manny Rat-
ner, Center swimming supervis-
or. The staffs of Camp North-
west and Twelfth Street Council
Camp will have the cooperation
of lifeguards and instructors of
the Department of Parks and
Recreation at Cooley High
School and Hutchins Intermedi-
ate.
Camp Northwest has added
two other staff members: Doris
Dombey and Walter Goodman,
Wayne University students.
The Twelfth Street Council
Camp staff will include Bea
Kahn, David Rappaport and
Mrs. Dottie Smith.

Eleven more young Detroiters
have been awarded the Ameri-
can Red Cross SENIOR LIFE-
SAVING CERTIFICATE, having
completed the training course
begun April 5 at the Center,. The
young adults who are now qual-
ified to be lifeguards, swimming
instructors and camp waterfront
counselors are Margaret Britton,
Helen Cuscutis, Betty Ferentz,
Elizabeth Ann Ginnelly, Henry
Hermelin, Robert Kavieff, Alva
Sachs, Mel Sachs, Martin Siegel,
Elaine Sokol and Ada Uronovitz.

SWIMMING CLASSES for the
junior children from 6 to 13 are
conducted Monday and Wednes-
day afternoons, 4:15 to 5:45 p.m.
for boys, Tuesday and Thurs-
day, 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. for girls,
through the end Of June.
Beginning Tuesday, July 5,
junior girls will swim from 3:45
to 4:30 p.m., Mondays through
Thursdays, and junior boys 4:30
to 5:15 p.m., Mondays through
Thursdays.
A d u l t swimming instruction
will be given to men on Monday
and Wednesday, 7 to 9 p.m., and
to women Tuesday and Thurs-
day, 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Morgenthau Lodge Lists
Installation for June 6

At the annual election meet-
ing held June 6, the following
members of Henry Morgenthau
Lodge of Bnai Brith were chbsen
to lead the lodge through 1949-
50.

vice presidents, Hilbert Sasin,
Irving Davis; secretaries, Sidney
Felstein, Leo Sobel, Herb Capp;
chaplain, Gabe Glantz; treas-
urer, Stan Wolf; warden, Fred

These officers will be installed
at an open meeting Monday,
June 27, at the Rose-Sittig
Cohen Bldg.
The third annual picnic of
the Morgenthau Lodge will be
held at 12 noon, Sunday, June
26, at Middle Rouge Park, cor-
ner of Haggerty Road and Hines
Drive. Games, contests, enter-
tainment, prizes and photos
have been planned. Refresh
ments will be available but each
family is requested to pack its
own lunch.
Chairman Iry Davis is assisted
by Paul Levine, Sam Shecter,
Jack Cornell, Herman Burton,
Gabe Glantz, Jack Caminker,
Leonard Klevansky, Leo Kaplan
and Morrie Nelson.
Harold (Cupie) Weiss, presi-
dent of Morgenthau bowling
league, announced that plans
have alteady been formulated
to expand the present 80 man
league to accommodate 150 men
for the coming season. The
league will continue to bowl
on Tuesday a n d Thursday
nights at Rowlawhile Alleys.
