Footnote to History
The story how the report of a Virginia psychiatrist blasted
the hopes of British officials in Washington of gaining President
Truman's backing of Britain's Palestine position was recently told
by friends of Dr. Z. Hubbard of Richmond. It was in the fall of
1947. Mr. Truman had been subjected to terrific pressure by
British diplomats and State Department officials who insisted
that American interests coincided with British policy. The Presi-
dent had also been subjected to a barrage from certain anti-
Zionist elements. Mr. Truman was firm. Then tales began reach-
ing him that Palestine was a nest for Jewish communists and
that a Jewish state in Palestine could become a dangerous in-
strument in the hands of Soviet Russia. British propaganda at
that time was spreading the fable that communists had infil-
trated the DP camps in Europe and that the stream of Jewish
immigrants to Palestine would propel with it the communist
Trojan Horse. A typical Missourian, the President decided to find
for himself whether the stories were true or not. It was under
those circumstances that Dr. Hubbard was asked by the Presi-
dent to make an on-the-spot investigation. Dr. Hubbard left for
Palestine in December of 1947 and remained there until February
of 1948. The war situation in Palestine at that time was tense.
Yet. Dr. Hubbard went on with his mission. Soon after his re-
turn he submitted his report to the White House. The effect of
the findings was to raise Truman's confidence in Zionist aims
and to demolish the communist lie. Dr. Hubbard believes that his
report was instrumental in the final shaping of the President's
attitude toward the Palestine issue.

Bibles For the Israeli Army
Don't be surprised if the Mizrachi Organization of America
comes up with a most intriguing project at its "Israel Week"
celebrations scheduled for June 19 through June 26. Just returned
from Israel, Mizrachi leaders Leon Gellman and Rabbi Max
Kirschblum have informed their national administrative board
that Israeli soldiers pleaded with them for Bibles which they
anxiously wish to have around for leisure reading or study dur-
ing leaves. Interestingly enough, the Mizrachi leaders reported,
the pleas came from Mapai and Mapam soldiers, as well as the
more religious Mizrachi and Agudah GI's. Mizrachi at its forth-
coming 29th annual national convention which will be held from
June 22-26 at Atlantic City, will undertake a project of collecting
50,000 Bibles printed in Hebrew for Israeli army boys.
