AMPAL Enlists Detroiters
As Debentures _Purchasers

Laying the groundwork for
the development of a • strong
Israeli investment movement in
Detroit, local . and guest speak-
ers Tuesday evening outlined the
-- importance of economic -effort
for the .Jewish State at the an-
nual dinner meeting of AMPAL
,(American Palestine Trading
Corporation) stockholders,
at

Hotel Statler.
Abraham Dickenstein, execu-
tive director of AMPAL, de-
scribed the new developments
to indicate the need for no=
nomic projects and for their
sponsorship by Jews in this
country. He said that 80 per
cent of western Palestine is in
Israeli hands and that Palestine
never was as Jewish as it is to-
clay.
"We believe that the Arabs
will not dare to attack us
again," he declared: "But we
have many problems to solve
and we are trying, with your
help, to overcome difficult
tasks. In 12. months we have
built 75 new colonies, we have
increased our population by
30 per cent. New 'we need the
f tools to build the necessary
5, factories and to provide long-
st term loans for the builders of
the Jewish State."
Mr. Dickenstein reviewed
AMPAL's progress, told of the
establishment of seven auxiliary
corporations, of the creaation of
the American-Israel Shipping
Co. which now operates . three
ships between the U. S. and Is-
rael—S. S. Haifa, S. S. Nathania
• and S. S. Naharia—and of the
wheat shipments that were
made by AMPAL when Israel
was left without food upon the
departure -of the British.
, He praised Detroit as one of
the first communities which
gave encouragement to AMPAL
An building an investment cor-
poration now possessing $7,500,-
000 of assets and asked for re-
newed assistance in the sale of
the present issue of $10,000,000
in 3% sinking fund debentures,
with the Manufacturers Trust
Co. of New York as trustee.
Harry Schumer, Detroit AM-
PAL chairman, greeted the in-
vestors and spoke with pride of
:the seven-year investment pro-

gram. Morris Lieberman, who
presided, emphasized the sig-
nificance of the partnership.
between AMPAL and the State
of Israel. Samuel Rattner, AM-
PAL field director, outlined the
turnover in AMPAL's business
which last year amounted to
$22,000,000. He reported that
Detroit has 500 AMPAL stock-
holders.
In a stirring address, Robert
St. John, noted commentator
and author, described his re-
cent stay in Israel and the
influence the spirit of Israel
has left on him. "I fell posi-
tively in love with the hand-
ful of brave people who de-
fied the entire Arab world and
the British empire," he said.
"Israel is the only country in
the world that asks no ques-
tions of its immigrarits. Since
the creation of Israel, Jews
are holding their heads high.
I have faith in Israel: If 40,-
000,000 Arabs could not hurl
the state into the sea, it is
not going to fail. Israel will go
on:"
Pointing out that the job has
only begun and that invest-
ments are vitally necessary for
Israel, Mr. St. John appealed
for Jewish aid in economic ef-
forts. He warned that anti-
Semitism is not dead and that
anti-Semites would chortle if
Jews failed to complete the job
of state-building in Israel. He
emphasized two words which he
brought back with him with
great joy from Israel—Shalom,
Peace, which was denied to Jews
for centuries and which they
now acquired with courage; and
L'Chaim—to health—with which
Jews give toasts. He concluded
by urging the audience to send
forth the L'Chaim message to
Israel in the form of large in-
vestments.
