Beth Yehudah PTA Ends First Year;
Summer • Day Camp Registration On

The first annual dinner of the
PTA of Yeshivath Beth Yehudah
will take place this Sunday eve-
ning, June 12, in the Yeshivah
auditorium. The dinner will sum
up the PTA's first year of ac-
tivity. according to Max Som-
berg, president.
More than 100 students, of
all ages, will perform for the
parents, in a variety of skits
illustrating the educational con-
tent of the Beth. Yehudah
schools. Projects on which the
PTA has been active, reports
Somberg, include collection of
books and equipment for a
school library, improvement of
the noon-day lunches, improved
alarm system for fire drill in
all classes, redecorating and re-
outfitting of the games rooms,
and provision of pianos for kin-
dergarten -and nursery rooms.
Proceeds of the dinner will be
used for equipment in the games
room.
Chairman of arrangements for
the dinner is Mrs. Isadore Levin.
She is assisted by Mrs. S. E.
Lerman and Mrs. Paul Seman-
sky, co-chairmen, and Mrs.
Grace Pomerantz, Mrs. Rose
Rubin and Mrs. Edith Golden.
Registration was opened this
week for the summer day-camp
of Beth Yehudah Schools. The
eight week session, which begins
June 27, will prOvide supervised
outdoor play • and Jewish train-
ing for 160 children ranging

for any two-week quarter of the
session, at 12301 Dexter.
Lunches and afternoon snacks,
will be served at the camp. All
children will be picked up and
delivered at home by Beth Yehu-
dah buses. All camp activities
are supervised by a staff of 15
counselors. "

committee of the American As-
sociation ' of English - JeWish
Newspapers, meeting here at
Hotel Statler, selected Dr. Alex-
ander Brin and Dr.. Joseph G.
Brin of Boston, editors and pub-
lishers of the Jewish Advocate,
as a committee for an annual
award by the Association to the
American publisher who has
rendered the greatest service
during the year for the advance-
ment of American ideals.
The Association accepted
the invitation of the National
Press Association to partici-
pate in sponsoring National
Newspaper Week, Oct. 1 to 8.
Jack Miller, editor of the Jew-
ish Times of Baltimore, was del-
egated to meet with the Com-
mittee on Post Office Affairs of
the United States House of Rep-
resentatives, to present the As-
sociation's view in oPposition to
drastic increases in Second Class
Postal Rates._ It was indicated
that the proposed increases in
rates will endanger the existence
of many weekly newspapers, and
the Association has appealed to
Congressional leaders to oppose
such drastic action.
The executive committee ac-
cepted the invitation of Dr. Nel-

son Glueck, president of Hebrew
Union College,- to hold the As-
sociation's next 'convention, in
February, 1950,_in Cincinnati, on
the occasion of the observance
of the 75th academic year of
the College. ,
Plans were made for a Press
Institute to be held at Yeshiva
College, New. York, the end of
October.

sociation elected the following
officers for the _coming year:
Meyer Silverman, president;
Sam Lipson, Ben Cohen, vice-
presidents; Albert Boesky, vice-
president and chairman of the
board of directors; Mrs. , Bertha
Friedman, recording secretary;
Sam Lieberman, executive sec-
retary; Louis Abramowitz,

This group is composed of
Jewish businessmen on the East
Side who seek to promote bet-
ter relations between Negroes
and Jews of this area.

Registration. is now going on
for CAMP NORTHWEST; t h e
latest Jewish Community Cen-
ter summer extension service for
junior members, 5 to 9, in
Northwest Detroit. According to
supervisor Frances Winokur
Stein, the program will give the
children all creative and recrea-
tional camp experiences, includ-
ing daily swimming at Cooley
High School.
Several mothers have volun-
teered in PLANNING ACTIVI-,
TIES to assist Mrs. Stein in set=
ting up, the new day camp.. The
committee includes Mesdames -
Ethel. Luri, Jack Pearlman,
Helen Ross, Ruth Schaeffer,
Charlotte Shapiro, Irma Wender,
and Beth Yura.
The professional staff includes
secretary, Mrs. Celia Goodman,
two counselors, •Roen Goodman
and Sol Ritter, and Mrs. Stein.
