LOUISE WATERMAN WISE

the final proofs of his father's
autobiography. Dr. Wise died
shortly before "Legend of
Louise" came off the press. As-
suming, however, that he had
seen the manuscript, he must
have been thrilled to learn of
the deep-rooted love his son had
for the great mother: Indeed,
the book is dedicated "To ' My
Father."
Proud of Her Courage
Jim is especially proud of his
mother's courage in rejecting an
award from the British govern-
ment because of the "ruthless
conduct of its representatives
with respect to the Jewish set-
tlement" in Palestine. He is
happy to know that his mother
lived long enough to see Israel
established as a nation. He re-

joices over her
activities in
many fields of endeavor.
The family background reveals
that Mrs. Wise came from a
thoroughly assimilated German
background. But together with
her husband she labored for
Jewish causes and became a
pillar in the fight for the Zion-
ist ideal. Her family resented
her Zionism, but that did not
deter her from her zeal for this
cause.'
One of her greatest achieve-
ments, ably described in her
son's book, was her work
through the Child Adoption
Committee of the Free Syna-
gogue.
-Indebted to Mrs. Wise
She had placed thousands of
children in proper homes and
fitted youngsters for adoption.
In all parts of the United States,
there are people who are in-
debted to Mrs. Wise for having
made their homes happier by
providing them with children.
As founder of the Women's
Division of the American Jewish
Congress, as creator of Congress
House for refugees, as translator
from the French, as a fighter
against Nazism and a leader in
the anti-Nazi boycott movement.
Mrs. Wise proved a great part-
ner to her great husband. And
her story is admirably told by
her able son.
