Address AMPAL Dinner Tuesday
A report by Abraham Dicken-
stein of Tel Aviv and New York,
secretary of AMPAL—American
Palestine Trading Corporation,
and an address by Robert St.
John, author and radio Com-
mentator, will feature the an-
nual meeting of Detroit AMPAL
stockholders next Tuesday eve-
ning at Hotel Statler Ballroom.
There will be dinner music by
Herschel Leib and his string en-
semble.
Wrote Best Seller
Mr. St. John, the guest speak-
er, who is the author of the
best seller, "Shalom Means
Peace," containing his impres-
sions of Israel where he visited
several months ago, will speak
on "Israel's Gates Are Open."

At Jewish Artists
Exhibit at Center
Henry Bernstein, Harry Glass-
gold, M. Solomon and Ben Yo-
men are the prizewinners of the
first annual Michigan Jewish
Artists Show now on at the
Jewish Center. The exhibit, free
to the public, will be on display
until June 14.
The awards were announced
by Mrs. Arthur Bloom; chair-
man of the Center Art Commit-
tee and $25 prize donor with Dr.
Bloom for the most outstanding
landscape, won by Yomen's oil
study, "Cleaning Fish."
Bernstein's oil of a little girl
in the dancing position, "Plie,"
was awarded the $25 prize of
Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Ger-
shenson for the most outstand-
ing contribution.
Glassford's "Off Bass Rocks,"
received 'Mr. and Mrs. Harry
Becker's $25 prize for - the most
outstanding watercolor.
The "Still Life" of potatoes
and onions by Solomon won Mrs.
John Imerman's $25 award for
the most outstanding example
of Michigan life.
Judges were John Coppin,
Louis Redstone - and Edward
Yaeger.
The show includes 61 art works
of watercolors, oil, ceramics,
wood cuts, charcoal, sculpture
and textile hand print by 31
artists. k

take place at 8:30 p. m. Wed-

- AMPAL has 10,000 bond-hold-
ers and stock-holders. Its gross
assets are valued at $7,200,000.

Its latest venture is the float-
ing of the $10,000,000-10-year,
3% sinking fund debentures. The
new bond issue is being issued
under trust debenture between
AMPAL and the Manfucaturers
Trust Co. of New York,.trustee.
Morris L. Schaver of Detroit
is one of the directors of AMPAL
which was organized in 1942 "to
promote trade relations between
the United States and Israel; to
make capital available for the
development of industrial, agri-
cultural, housing, transportation
and other enterprises in Israel."
The purpose of the new deben-
ture issue is to assist in the
construction of low cost housing
for new immigrants in Israel, to
acquire machinery for Israel's
industrial enterprises, to en-
courage development of trans-
portation companies and to build
public works in the Jewish State.
AMPALS Assets
Morris Lieberman and Harry
Schumer, who head the Michi-
gan AMPAL committee, stated
that during the past year AM-
PAL has made marked progress.
During 1949, AMPAL facilit-
ated the shipment of close to
03,000,000 in goods to Israel. The
company has maintained its
dividend record by paying 4%
to stockholders. As a result of
the company's expansion, AM-
PAL now has six affiliated sub-
sidiary companies. In recent
months it helped finance an
11.000-ton vessel—the S. S. Haifa
—the first to be added to the
Israeli merchant marine to sail
between the ports of Haifa and
New York.

National Assembly for Labor
Israel, June 20 to 22, at the Hotel
New Yorker, New York.
Under the sponsorship of the
labor Zionist Organization of
America, the assembly will be
devoted to analyses of various
aspects of Israeli labor, culture
and social science, as well as
American Jewish life.
In an explanation of the ob-
jects of the National Assembly
for Labor Israel, Dr. Bery Fry-
mer, general secretary of LZOA,
said "it generally - is understood
that no permanent organization-
al structure would or should
evolve from the assembly. The
objective should be the conven-
ing of a yearly assernbly of

tional Assembly for Labor Israel
NEW YORK, (JTA)—The ex-
tent to which Zionist bodies in
the U. S. will enjoy autonomy
and whether they must subject
themselves to decisions of the
Jewish Agency executive was not
formally disposed of by the Zion-
ist Actions Committee, it was
reported by Dr. Nahum Gold-
man, chairman of the American
section of the Jewish Agency
executive. Dr. Goldman has just
returned from Jerusalem where
he attended the ten-day session
of the Actions Committee.
This issue was the one over
v•ich Drs. Abba Hillel Silver
and Emanuel Neumann resigned
from the executive. The session,
Dr. Goldmann said, did much to
establish a system of coopera-
tion between the Israeli Govern-
ment and the Jewish Agency ex-
ecutive in the field of immigra-
tion and absorption.
