of Israel Day
On the occasion of the db-
,servance of the first anniversary
of the State of Israel, _Gov. G.
Mennen Williams issued a proc-
lamation declaring May 15 State
of Israel Day. His proclamation,
which was read to the 15,000 by
Sidney Shevitz, chairman, at the
Coliseum rally on Sunday, de-
clares:
"All the world welcomes the
new State of Israel to the
family , of Democratic nations.
"The winning of independ-
ence for this new Common-
wealth marks the end of a
2,000-year tragedy, the home-
lessness of the Jewish people.
"The Government of the
United States has extended its
recognition to the new State
of Israel, and the people of
the United States join in re-
joicing over this victory for
freedom and democracy.
"Now therefore, I, G. Men-
nen Williams, Governor of the
State of Michigan, do hereby
proclaim May 15, 1949, as State
of Israel Day in Michigan, and
invite all of our citizens to join
in celebrating that day as the
first anniversary of Israel's
Declaration of Independence."
Al Sparage, vice chairman of the Auxiliary Trade and
Professional Division reports that the distribution of worker's
kits has been completed for all seven sections.
The Building Trade Council Section met this week with
chairman Mandel L. Berman to assign more than 300 pros-
pects slips for painters and carpenters.
Leonard Grabow, Ralph Helpern and Sylvia Collins, co-
chairmen of the Professional Section, also held a workers'
meeting to discuss campaign techniques and make assignments.
