Allied Jewish Campaign Closes
May 31; Goal Short $2,300,00

Israel's New Role as
59th Member of UN

By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ
Jewish News UN Correspondent

.

May 12.—There were mo-
LAKE SUCCESS, N.
ments, today and yesterday, here and at Flushing Meadows,
which will never be forgotten by those who experienced
them. The sight of Israel's flag flying, under a blue sky, on
this bright day, among the flags of the nations of the world,
provided thrills which caused many eyes to moisten at the
joy of knowing that, for the first time, Jews are the political
equals of all peoples.
Israel's Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett, whose initial
address before the United Nations General Assembly the
evening before brought forth a tremendous ovation, delivered
an extemporaneous address which echoed the emotions of
all Jews. The 500 or more who witnessed the ceremony—
as many non-Jews as Jews—were deeply moved.
Then began the series of committee meetings—and at
each one were seated Israeli representatives, now acting in
official capacities as spokesmen for the 59th nation to be
admitted to the UN.

Louis Berry, chairman of the 1949 Allied Jewish Campaign for a goal of
$6,395,000, announced this week that Tuesday, May 31, has been set as the closing date
for the drive, and issued an urgent call to all workers to complete their solicitations
and to make every effort to reach all prospective contributors.

With only a week left to complete the tremendous task of raising the largest
goal on record for a Detroit campaign, leaders are apprehensive over the results in
view of the fact that $2,300,000 more is needed to attain the goal.

Isidore Sobeloff, executive director of the campaign, stated that the closing rally
on May 31 will be an evening meeting, to be held at the Jewish Center. He expressed
the hope that it will permit the clbsing of the drive, and urged all workers to cover
their assigned slips and to report at that meeting.

At the workers' rally on Tuesday, Julian H. Krolik, who presided, reported that
the sum subscribed up to that time amounted to $4,012,875 and represented 63 per
cent of the goal and 47 per cent of the prospects.

Yehuda Hellman, Israeli correspondent, guest speaker at Tuesday's meeting, de-
clared that the upbuilding of Israel now represents a human problem and that the chal-
lenge to American Jews is to prove their willingness to help settle 1,000,000 Jews in Is-
rael in the next three years. Samuel H. Rubiner outlined the objectives of all the local
agencies which are included in the campaign quota.

Statement by Israel's Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett
On the Raising of the Israeli Flag at United Nations

At 10:30 A.M. Thursday, May 12, 1949

This Star of David, which has been carried with us in the thousands of years of our exile, dispersion and martyrdom, this Star of David, which
has been used by our oppressors as a badge of shame, this Star of David, which has been our lodestar in all our wanderings, this white and blue flag
which we have carried with us in our trials and tribulations in the land of Israel, which accompanied our pioneers when they broke new ground in the
wilderness, which was raised by our fighters for freedom in the last world war, in all battlefields, which was hoisted over the walls of the Ghetto of
Warsaw in that desperate rebellion, this flag, which has been a rallying point for the forces of Jewish people struggling to achieve their liberation in
our ancestral home, is now marking our full emancipation, has now been raised proudly as the 59th flag in this great circle, symbolizing the aspira-
tions and unity of mankind.
It is a great event. I can only pray that we may prove worthy of the dignity
this restores to us, that we may prove equal to the responsibilities which this new sta-
tus imposes on us. My heart goes out to all those who fell struggling for a new and
better future for their people, whose supreme sacrifice has brought us to this stage.
May those who lost their dear ones in this momentous struggle find comfort by the
thought that the sacrifice has not been in vain, that they died to achieve life, liberty,
equality in the family of nations, full creative opportunity for the national genius of
their people.

The vote confirming Israel's admission as the fifty-ninth member of the United Nations
officially was announced at 6:28 p.m. (7:28 p. m. New York time) on Wednesday, May 11,
1949. After a brief statement by the President of the UN General Assembly, Dr. , Herbert V.
Eva tt, and an address of welcome in Spanish by Henriquez Urena of the Dominican Re-
public, Mr. Sharett delivered the first official Israeli address to the General Assembly in the
course of Which, for the first time,•the United Nations delegation heard a Hebrew quotation
(from the second chapter of Isaiah) with which he concluded his statement. Mr. Sharett's
closing statement was:

"Whatever share we may have in the counsel of the United Nations will be
devoted wholly to strengthening peace in the world, to furthering brotherhood of peoples
and to safeguarding the equality and dignity of man.

"We are a young nation but an ancient people. We are beginners in the art of
practical statecraft. But it is our privilege and responsibility to be able to draw upon
a rich and varied stock of universal experience.
"We enter this Assembly, which represents the collective statesmanship of ' the
world, in a spirit of humility, anxious for guidance and enlightment. We hope that our
ability to learn may be enhanced by the ancient teachings and age-old aspirations of
the Jewish people.
"May it be recalled that on the most solemn day in the Jewish calendar our people
pray for the day when all the peoples of the earth shall unite in one fraternity to seek
the salvation of mankind, and that it was the Prophets of Israel who bequeathed to
the world the vision of a time when "nation shall not lift up sword against nation; neither
shall they learn war any more." "V'lo yiso goy el goy herev v'lo yilmedu od milhanaa."
