U. S. Hebrew Culture
Council is Outlined
At National Meeting
NEW YORK, (JTA) — Jewish
scientists, educators, scholars
and cultural leaders, represent-
ing 35 national. Jewish organ-.
izations, adopted a resolution to
cerate a council of these organ-
izations to promote Hebrew cul-
ture in this country. The dele-
gates attending the two-day
first American Conference for
Hebrew Language and Culture,
sponsored by the Histadruth
Ivrith of . A m e r i c a, included
Bernard Isaacs and M. Noble of
Detroit.
The resolution also declared
that in the light of the estab-
lishment of the Jewish state
the promotion of the Hebrew
language and Hebrew culture
roust play its rightful role on
the American Jewish scene. Dr.
Chaim Weizmann, President of
Israel, in a message to the con-
ference, said "the day is not far
when the spiritual , life of Amer-
ican Jewry will be strongly in-
terrelated with the cultural
values of Israel."
Israeli Ambassador to the
United States Eliahu Elath de-
clared in a message, that "He-
brew languageandoeducation are
the only means for suitable and
permanent brotherhood be-
tween Israel and Jews every-
where. He called upon the con-
ference to rally American Zion-
ists 'for intensified and increas-
ing activities on behalf of the
promotion of Hebrew language
and culture" which "must ce-
ment into one solid nation the
thousands of immigrants who
are arriving in Israel every
month."
Israel's Representative to the
UN Aubrey Eban asserted that
the Jewish State's future de-
pends to a great extent on the
strengthening _ of its cultural
bonds with world Jewry.
Samuel J. Borowsky was elec-
ted president of Histadrut Ivrith
at this conference.

Fae Higgins, will present a panel
discussion on "Eating Habits and
Problems of the Pre-School
Child." MiSs Doty will discuss
the psychological aspects while
the other discussants will con-
cern themselves with the die-
tary aspects. All parents and
friends are invited.

A symposium on "ISRAEL TO-
DAY" is being planned in cele-
bration of the forthcoming first
anniversary of the new State. of
Israel by the adult department
of the Jewish Center, for 3 p.m.
Sunday, May 8. The symposium
panel, • presided over by Boaz
Siegel, law instructor at Wayne
University, will include Dean
Daniel .J. McKenna of the Uni-
versity of Detroit- Law School,
who will. speak on "How Israel
Will be Governed"; Harold Sil-
ver, director of the Resettlement
Service of the Jewish Social
Service Bureau, whose topic will
be "Economic Developments in
Israel--Absorption of Newcom-
ers," and Rabbi Joshua S.
Sperka cf Cong. Bnai David, who
will speak on "Religion in Israel
Today." The public is invited.

Mrs. Irene Ellis Murphy,
United Nations social welfare
advisor on leave from the Philip-
pines, will speak on her "Mission
to the Philippines" for the WED-
NESD.A.Y EVENING- DISCUS-
SION Group at 9 p.m. May 11 in

Jewish. Center. Mrs. Murphy's
talk will include personal ex-
periences in handling relief in
the Philippine Islands during
her two years' work there and
the entire program of the United
Nations in foreign nations as
well as in the United States.

1949 Allied Jewish Campaign with a 20 per cent increase over
their 1948 contributions at their dinner meeting last week.
