Weizmann. The affair was a
state function. President Tru-
man paid high tribute to the Is-
raeli Chief of State, referring to
him as "a great leader and one
of the world's greatest scien-
tists." Truman said that he
had recently read "Trial and
Error," the autobiography of
"this very modest man," adding
that "If you will read between
the lines you will find in the
book much more than the print
itself says."
In reply, President Weizmann
said that he was "deeply moved"
by his reception and expressed
toast by Truman, Weizmann
toasted the "prosperity of your
great country."
Weizmann presented Truman
with a bronze plaque on which
is inscribed the entire text—in
English—of the Israeli Declara-
tion of Independence. The pre-
sentation was made "as a token
of the deep and grateful appre-
ciation of the government and
people of Israel" for Truman's
efforts in their behalf. The
plaque was engraved by Moritz
Gottlieb, of Allentown, Pa.
Other luncheon guests includ-
ed Vice-President Barkley, Sen.
Margaret Chase Smith, Rear Ad-
miral Robert L. Denison.
World Jewry Pays Tribute
To Memory of Rabbi Wise
NEW YORK, (JTA)—Lea.ders
in all walks of American life,
spokesmen for the many and
varied groups and organizations
in the Jewish community and
many friends and colleagues
among persons of all faiths,
joined 40,000 April 22 in paying
their last respects to Rabbi
Stephen S. Wise who died in a
New York hospital at the age
of 75.

was one of his pupils at the
Jewish Institute of Religion
which Dr. Wise founded and of
which he was president. Rabbi
Leon Fram paid honor to Dr.
Wise in a sermon at Temple Is-
rael services last Friday and
other rabbis honored the lead-
er's memory during services last
Sabbath.)

JCC Elections Are
Planned for May 11
Nominations and election of
officers and executive commit-
tee of the Jewish Community
Council will be conducted at a
delegates' meeting at 8:30 p.m.
Wednesday, May 11, at the Jew-
ish Community Center, Aaron
DrOock, Council president, an-
nounced. -
In addition, the delegates will
consider several changes in the
Council constitution, which have
been drafted by a committee led
by Louis Rosenzweig.
Only qualified delegates are
eligible for election. Any organ-
ization wishing to clarify the
status of its delegates may call
the Council office, CH. 1657.

Jim Crowley Opens
Central High Series
The first in a new series of
cultural programs for parents
and students will be presented
at Central High School at 8:15
p. m. this Friday, under spon-
sorship of the Central Student
Council.
Guest speaker will be Jim
Crowley, Washington correspon-
dent and columnist, whose week-
ly radio broadcast is heard on
station WWJ each Sunday after-
noon. He will discuss a topic of
current interest to high school
students and their parents.
Succeeding programs in the
series will include films, discus-
sions and other lectures. There
will be a nominal charge for
admission.
Labor Zionists to Celebrate
Israel Freedom Day Wednesday
All Labor Zionists and their'
friends are invited to the Yom
Haatzmauth celebration on
Israel Independence Day, Wed-
nesday, May 4, to be sponsored
by the Labor Zionist Organiza-
tion and its affiliates, Farband,
Pioneer Women and Habonim.
The program, Which will take
place at 8:30 p.m. at the Labor
Zionist Institute, Linwood at
Pasadena, will feature as guest
speakers Philip Slomovitz, edi-

Zemel.
Rosina Lakritz and Morris
Weiner, with Eliza Stulman at
the piano, will present songs of
Israel. A skit, Medinat Israel,
will be offered by the Hab-
onim. Students of the ' Labor
Zionist Folk Schools will pre-
sent readings and recitations.
Louis Levine will lead com-
munity singing, and refresh-
ments will complete the pro-
gram.
City Honors Harold Russell,
Guest of JWV, BEY() Sunday
Acting Mayor George Edwards
has proclaimed Sunday, May 1,
as Harold Russell Day in Detroit.
Under the joint sponsorship of
the Jewish War Veterans and
the Bnai Brith Youth Organiza-
tion, Harold Russell will be wel-
comed here at two major events
on that day.
Russell, who has been touring
the country speaking on univer-
sal brotherhood, will address a
quarterly meeting of the Jewish
War Veterans of Michigan and
their auxiliries at 8 p.m. at the
Jewish Community Center. Mas-
ter of ceremonies will Depart-
ment Commander Harold F.
Moran. Mrs. Samuel J. Rhodes
will be in charge of refresh-
ments.
In the afternoon, at the Bnai
Brith Youth Jubilee, he will ad-
dress close to 1500 young people.
Rabbi J. J. Sperka will give the
invocation. Irving Berg will be
master of ceremonies and Harry
Mervis will be narrator. Herman
Pritz and a 30-piece orchestra
will render musical selections.
The meeting will be at 2 p.m.
The jubilee will climax a week-
end of Bnai Brith Youth affairs.
On April 30, the annual AZA
spring dance will be held at
the Masonic Temple.
Albania No. 53
LONDON (JTA)—The Alban-
ian Government has reocgnized
the State of Israel, the Albanian
radio at Tirana, capital of the
country, announced. The Adri-
atic country is the 53rd to ex-
tend diplomatic status to the
Jewish state.
Rabbi Morris Adler, for
many years a personal friend
of Dr. Stephen S. Wise, will
pay tribute to the departed
leader in a sermon at the
Shaarey Zedek on Sabbath
morning.
3,200 persons were inside the
Hall and another 15,000 - jammed
the sidewalks outside the build-
ing. President Truman was per-
sonally represented by his as-
sistant David Niles. President
Weizmann could not attend be-
cause he was indisposed, but
Mrs. Weizm an n,. Ambassador
Eliahu Elath, Consul-General
Arthur Lourie, Mrs. Eleanor
Roosevelt and Mayor William
O'Dwyer were present. Thr cc
hundred policemen were on duty
including an honor guard of
Shomrim—members of an or-
ganization of Jews on New
York's police force.
Dr. David Petergorsky, execu-
tive director of the American
Jewish Congress, delivered the
eulogy. Officiating at the serv-
ices were Rabbis Edward E.
Klein and J. X. Cohen of the
Free Synagogue, which -Rabbi
Wise founded and of which he
was. senior rabbi.
Messages of condolence were
received by Dr. Wise's family
from Jewish communities in
Argentina, Chile, Sweden, India,
Poland, Mexico, San Salvador,
