16 — THE JEWISH NEWS Harry Cohen Again Heads Z Day; Annual ZOD Meeting on May 19; Announce Scholarship to Israel Friday, April 29, 1949 Bale Post Named Cage Champions By Maxine R. Levin Jewish News Art Editor „ , • y ‘idener and Sarkisian Two-Man Show - •I had a real treat in a pre- view of the two man show which Walter Midener and Sarkis Sar- kisian opened this week at the Artists Market. Seeing their work in their studios and find- ing the artist in his natural habitat, I was impelled to have the artists tell me about the forces which make them create. I asked each artist to tell me what he is trying to do. Walter Midener, sculptor, said, "My work is a statement of what I think of the world and my surroundings. My work is the window of my ideas. As far as execution goes, I make the dif- ference between th.e material I use and choose the material that will serve the idea best. If WALTER MIDENER'S 'GIRL IN THE WIND' I use wood, I want the onlooker to be invited to touch and feel the wood, I want to appeal to his sensual impulse, have him feel it in its volume. The grain of wood is handled to describe the contour. If I use clay or terra cotta, it is because it casts every nuance of light. "A piece of sculpture should not be top heavy, leaning to one quality or another, but design and sensitive distribution of light and shadow are balanced to make it more real, at this point painting and sculpture . come the nearest. In design, I'm after a strong architectural idea. In form, I like the human body as an expression of human emotions." Sarkis Sarkisian, painter, said: "Exaggeration is to make for more reality. I exaggerate a part in order to achieve a realistic purpose, I exaggerate in order to concentrate on the identity of ' the thing painted. Antiquity is important to me, knowledge of antiquity gives a painting an everlasting quality. What makes a good 'Picture? —good design. a sensitive and living line, the sensitive relationship of color, tasteful application of . paint, a good painting shows a man's in- tegrity and his personal attitude toward life. Every bit of a painted surface counts, from its most delicate to its strongest part. Mere is the sense of touch in the application of paint to a 'surface, every color • spa: must show its importance, every bine must be important and sig- . nificant, this gives liveliness and reality to a painting." - „ Painting and sculpture are closely allied, and the work of these two men is closely allied Each nodded in understanding as the other spoke. The window of Midener's ideas is illustrated by "Little Prophet" and "Grief," both emotional pieces of the protest of man. "Girl in the Wind" is the exhilaration of life, the human body expressing human emotions of freedom and joy. "Man with a Bird" and "Europa and the Bull" are arch- itectural compositions, designed to tell a story and it is easy for you to read that story. "Reclin- ing Girl" is a choice piece of wood carving in rose wood, it is a tactile experience, you want to caress the surface, enjoy the color of the wood and the subtle, restful design. Sarkisian's paintings are par- ticularly beautiful and exciting. Canvasses of flowers are done in exquisite taste and the sur- faces he speaks of are lively, delicate, with color relationships brought to an almost mathe- matical precision. These are strong, personal, tactile surfaces. You feel a sense of antiquity about these paintings, there is nothing garish about them, you feel his respect for beauty and his kinship to the forms of old Greek sculpture. "Still Life with Lemons," "The Red Lobster" and others are ex- periences in color and compo- sition, with sensitive line de scribing the identity of the sub- ject. painted. In "Girl with the Tropical Flowers" and "Trapeze Performer" there is the exagger- ation of the large heads on small bodies which makes each more particularly what they are; the big eyes of the sensitive girl looking out of the canvass and the other a description of the woman first in the attitude of an arielist. These two do seem more real and the idea more perfectly identified by this ex- aggeration. The 'exhibition of sculpture by Walter Midener and paintings by Sarkis, opened Wednesday, April 27, at the Detroit Artists Market, 108 Madison Ave., and will - continue through May 10. Both men have exhibited wide- ly in major art exhibitions throughout the country and it is a real event in Detroit art to see this. group of sculpture and painting. Pfc.
