Sunday for Dexter Building

The ground . breaking ceremony of the joint building of
the Jewish Community Center, Dexter Branch, and the Jew-
ish War Veterans Memorial Home will take place at 11 a.m,
Sunday, April 24, it was announced by Samuel H. Rubiner,
president of the Center, and Samuel J. Rhodes, president of
A large delegation of Chapter I the JWV Memorial Home Association.

Jr. Hadassah, Little Women Meet Chapter I Plans
At Tea; Plan Two Israel Dances Conference Trip

Junior Hadassah will celebrate
Israel's birthday with a semi-
formal ball in the Jade Room of
the Detroit-Leland Hotel Satur-
day evening, May 14. The dance
will be a combined celebration
and fund-raising event, according
to Judy Pregerson, chairman of
the fund-raising committee.
All proceeds will be sent to
Meier Shfeyah, the children's vil-
lage in Israel supported by all
Junior Hadassah chapters in the
United States. This year the quota
for the Detroit chapter is $2,250.
Phil Brestoff and his orchestra
will provide the music. Tickets
may be purchased at the Jewish
Community Center, Lieberman
and Citrin Restaurant, Nate's
Delicatessen, Brother's (7 Mile
Road) or from Miss Pregerson,

Little Women of Hadassah will
present their Anniversary Ball,
commemorating the first anni-
versary of the birth of Israel,
May 21 at the Book Cadillac.

The Detroit unit of Junior
Hadassah will be hostess to the
Little Women of Hadassah at
their joint meeting and tea at
2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 24, at
the home of Sophie Shulman,
1516 W. Chicago Blvd., according
to Jean Jaslove, program chair-
man.
Guest speaker for the afternoon
will be Helen Kass, who will
speak on highlights of her trip
to Israel. -

Career Group Offers
Minstrel Show Feature
At Next Co-ed Event

A "Minstrel Show" will be the
featured entertainment at the
next co-ed affair of the Career
Group, National Council of Jew-
ish Women, to be held at 8:45
p.m. Monday, April 25 at the
Jewish Community Center.
The show will be given through
the courtesy of the Briggs Mfg.
Co. Glee Club, directed by Mrs.
Butterfield. Music for the dancing
will be provided by the F. G.
Sound System, and refreshments
will round off the evening. .

Young People's Club of Cong.

Young Married Couples
Have Election Meeting

The Young Married Couples
Group of Cong. Bnai Moshe will
meet at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Morton Sobel, 19353 Little-

Election of officers will take
place, and distribution of the
proceeds from the dance held
April 2 will be arranged. Rabbi
Moses Lehrman will deliver an
impromptu talk on a phase of
Judaism.

will hold its annual installation
and initiation banquet at 6:15 p.m.
Monday, April 25, in the Ambas-
sador Room of the Elmwood
Hotel, Windsor.
Harry E. Brager of Washing-
ton, D. C., national membership
chairman of Bnai Brith, will in-
stall new officers and initiate
new members.
Guest speaker will be Ken W.
MacTaggart, staff writer of the
Toronto Globe, a recent visitor
in Israel, who will speak on I4
"The Truth About Israel." There
will be a floor show, featuring
Trances Langford, stage, radio
and screen star. Dancing will fol-
low the program.

A gala evening for Chapter I
members has been planned for
the evening before the confer-
ence, Saturday, April 30. Trans-
portation will be furnished to

The next rehearsal of the choral
group will be held at 2:30 p.m.

Sunday evening, May 8, Chap-
ter I's Dramatic Group will pre-
sent the "Play of the Year," an
old-fashioned drama, at the Jew-
ish Community Center. Admis-
sion will be the purchase of one
tree certificate, for a tree to be
planted in Israel under the au-
spices of the Jewish National
Fund.
The "Party of the Year" will
be given Saturday night, May 14,
to celebrate the establishment of
the State of Israel.

Beth El Young People
Hold Elections, Dance;
Dr. Glazer Will Speak

Election of officers for the com-
ing year, followed by an election
day dance, is the program for this
Sunday afternoon for the Young
People's Club of Temple Beth El.
Balloting will take place at 2:30
p.m. in the Men's Club Room,
followed by dancing in the social
hall.
At the election session, Dr. B.
Benedict Glazer will speak on
"Pathways to Maturity."
Nominations have been an-
nounced by the nominating *com-
mittee, which includes Virginia
Brown, Mary Lou Kleinman,
Freda Gantz, Henry Schiffer and
Jerry Stenbuck. Additional nom-
inations will be , accepted from
the floor.
The meeting and dance are
open to all young people, al--
though voting -will be limited to
members of the YPC.

Detroit Common Council Presi-
dent George Edwards has been in-
vited to head the list of commun-
ity leaders who will participate
in the ceremony. Others who
have been invited to speak on this
occasion are: Robert McRae, ex-
ecutive director of the Detroit
Community Chest; Judge Theo-
dore Levin, president of the Unit-
ed Jewish Charities; Ithidore Sob-
oloff, executive director, Jewish
Welfare Federation; Julian Kro-
lik, president of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation; Rubiner; Rhodes;
Harry T. Madison, national execu-
tive committeeman of the Jewish
War Veterans, and Harold F.
Moran, JWV department com-
mander.
Rabbi Morris Adler, chaplain of
the Department, will pronounce
the invocation.

Following the ceremony, con-
struction of the building will be
started by the Lerner Linden
Company. It is anticipated that
the building will be completed
for a Hanukah dedication in De-
cember.
Harvey H. Goldman,. chairman
of the Dexter building committee,
and vice president of the Center,
has announced that the two-story
building will contain an audi-
torium, a lobby, a large games
room, seven meeting rooms, a
nursery room, an arts and crafts
room, a woodwork shop, a library,
a music room, a teen-age lounge,
an adult lounge, and a photog-
raphy dark room as well as
offices for the staff.
Adjoining the building will be
a playground, 210 by 170 feet,
including pre-school play area
and outdoor play equipment for
juniors and teen-agers.
Servicemen's Memorial
The JWV home Will include a
memorial room dedicated to the
more than . 300 Detroit Jewish
men who lost their lives in the
service Of their country.

The building also will include
seven meeting rooms, lounges,
games room and administration
space. On the first and second
floors will be kitchen facilities.
$200,000 for the construction
of the Dexter Branch was made
available by the 1948 Allied Jew-
ish Campaign. The United Jewish
Charities purchased the site at a
cost of $50,000. The Jewish War
Veterans will conduct a cam-
paign for funds for the construc-
tion of their part of the building
after the completion of the. 1949
Allied Jewish Campaign, it was
announced by Isadore Rosenberg,
executive director of the Jewish
War Veterans.
The committee on arrangements
includes co-chairmen Rubiner
and Rhodes, and Jacob Kiedan,
Harvey Goldman, Morris Garvett,
Isadore Rosenberg, Samuel Neu-
schatz, Harry Madison and Her-
man Jacobs.

Organization of America voted to
nominate Dewey D. Stone, of
Brockton, for the presidency of
the ZOA at the forthcoming con-
