Complete Arrangements for Opening of
1949 Drive April 24; Sharett to Speak
Launching the 1949 Allied Jew-
ish Campaign for the Trade and
Professional Divisions and the
closing of the women's phase of
the drive, Moshe Sharett. Foreign
Minister of the state of Israel,
will address an ail-community
meeting, Sunday, April 24, at 8
p.m., in the auditorium of Cass
Technical High School. The Trade
and Professional divisions will
begin individual solicitation of
prospects, following up a series
of group solicitation me-kings in
each division. The meeting will
climax The Day for the Women's
Division when workers in Gen-
eral Solicitation will visit 14,000
prospects. To date, the women
have collected more than $150,000
pre-campaign and special gifts
solicitation..
The Junior Division will also
present final r e p or t s at the
Sharett meeting. The Juniors
enter the final days of their cam-
paign with nearly $45,000 in
pledges already made.
Representatives of all groups
in the Jewish community will
gather for the Sharett meeting,
to honor the Israeli foreign min-
ister's first visit to Detroit. The
Dentists -Increase 1948 Gifts
meeting will be under the chair-
manship of Louis Berry, general
campaign chairman for 1949. •
Heading the nine Trade and
Professional Divisions who will
L•en their drive on April 24 are:
Samuel H. Rubiner, Mercantile;
John Isaacs, Services; Milton K.
Mahler, Mechanical Trades; Bar-
ney Smith and George D. Sey-
burn, Real Estate and Building;
Paul Zuckerman, Food; Jason L.
Honigman, Professional; and Paul
P. Broder, Arts and Crafts.
A native of Russia.' Sharett has
lived in Palestine, now Israel,
since 1905. The head of the po-
litical department of the Jewish
gency, Sharett first gained
world-wide notice because of his
effective plea for an immediate
grant by the UN of a homeland
fox the Jewish people.
The 1949 Campaign, whose
theme is Homecoming has a goal
of $6,395,000. In tnis one united
C.rjve, the Jews of Detroit sup-
port the United Jewish Appeal
of the Joini. Distribution Commit-
tee, the United Palestine Appeal,
and the United Service for New
Americans, health and welfare,
educational and cultural and
group relations agencies, local
agencies such as the Jewish Home
for Aged, Jewish•Vocational Serv-
ice, Resettlemept Service, and
Jewish educational services.

British Businessmen Go
Daily' for Israel Visas
LONDON, (JTA)-Thee Israeli
Consulate here is now issuing
between 30 and 40 visas daily,
many of them to British business-
men interested in potential mar-
kets in Israel that the pending
British-Israeli trade talks may
open.
Holiday Greetings
Some 50 housing, units were
,completed in the neighborhood of
Tel Aviv during mid-March and
1007 other units were nearing
completion, For a minimum of
200,000 immigrants entering Is-
rael, UPA agencies must expend
this year at least $100,000,000 on
housing—each unit costs $2,250
and houses three persons in one
room with kitchen and bathroom
facilities.
