New Illuminated Haggadah

Reviewed by .

A rn a g n ifieently illuminated
Haggadah in gold, bItte, recl, pur-
ple, yellow, and green is "The
Pesach Haggadah" by K a f r a,
published by Feldheim, New
York. Written in the liquid style
of the medieval manuscripts,. it
reveals all the beauty that lies in
the individuality of each letter,•
sc characteristic to writing as
contrasted to print. The famous
"Prager" Haggadah found its
true replica in this script that
imitates even the peculiar me-
dieval -vocalization and the man-

ner of punctuation.
Large initials in gold and color
produce rhythm .andw splendor.
Accompanying the script and
supplementing it are rich orna-

ments, framing the pages,, swing-
ing like .harmony into the text
and in-between the lines, caress-
ing the holy content with infinite
love, and, yet, not distracting in
their rich color froth the script
c.ontent s of the page.
Miniatures illustrate the text,
but they also, as true illumina-
tions, serve rather than dominate
the page (There is only one full
page illustration in the whole
book.)
One critical remark, however,
this reviewer wants to make. An
artist, strong as the creator of
this.. Haggadah, shoUld not have
Curbed her own, inborn Jewish
strength to such an extent as to
appear completely medieval.
The artist Kafra (Mrs. Kahan-
Frankel) lives in Budapest where
her husband holds a leading posi-
tion in Hungarian Jewry. Her
sons, who are -responsible for the
copy of the text, brought with
them the original to this country
where it found in Feldheim a
publisher who did its utmost to
create a book worthy of the
original.
In a separate appendix the
whole Haggadah is reproduced in
smaller scale in black and white
print and translated into digni-
fied English by Isaac E. Kiev.

NEW YORK—The Zionist Or-
ganization of America has launch-
ed a nationwide registration of
Atneridan Zi,pnists in a "Book of
Remembrance," signifying the
American Zionist role in the ef-
forts leading to the creation of
the Jewish State of Israel.
Dedicated to the biblical theme,
"If I Forget Thee, 0 Jerusalem,"
the "Book of Remembrance" will 24
be deposited for permanent safe-
keeping in the Cential Library of
the Israeli Government in Jeru-
salem as a' testimonial to the
American Zionist share in the

struggle of the people of Israel
for indenependence.. It is planned

Cancer's Danger Signals

Progress Is being mad.
.
Today, thanks to scientific re-
search, a diagnosis of Cancer is
no longer a death warrant. Cer-
tain Cancer cases are now being
cured: This year one quarter of
all Cancer patients will be saved
by surgery, X-ray or radium. But
these encouraging facts do not
mean our fight against Cancer is
over. It has really only begun:
How soon we find the cause and
