PFC. JOSEPH SPITZER died
in action in the Belgian Bulge
Dec. 26, 1944. Funeral services
were held at the Hebrew Benevo-
lent Society, with interment at
Hebrew Memorial Park. Rabbi
Morris Adler and Cantor Jacob
Sonenklar officiated. He is sur-
vived by his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Sam Spitzer of 2273 Clair-
mont; his brothers, Morris and
Harry, and his sister Ethel.

Rep. Andrew L. Somers, 54,
Brooklyn Congressman (Dem.)
since 1924, died April 6 in New
York.
He was chairman of the House
Committee on Public Lands at the
time of his death. He was senior
member of the Brooklyn dele-
gation.
30
Actively interested in Zionism,
Rep. Somers prodded the party
leadership on the Palestine issue
in the post-war years. His Con-
gressional record, generally, fol-
lowed the orthodox Democratic
line. The section of Brooklyn he
represented is composed largely
of Jewish. Irish and Negro
residents.

Because. of the vast influx of
newcomers, whose most basic
needs involve a broad range of
expenditures, the Jewish Agency
for Palestine, during the last two
weeks, operated at a deficit of
more than $1,000,000 per week.
