State Zionist Region Endorses Frisch;
Controversy Rages on ZOA Presidency

Morris Jacobs, 'president of the
Michigan Zionist Region, in a
telegraphic . message to The Jew-
ish News on Monday morning ;
made known the decision of the
executive committee of the re-
gion, on Sunday, to support Dan-
iel Frisch of Indianapolis for the
presidency of the Zionist Organ-
ization of America. The text of
the resolution as incorporated in
the 6elegram reads:

"Whereas, the executive board of
the Michigan Zionist Region, meeting
at Grand Rapids, 'noted that Zionists
throughout the country have called
- upon Daniel Frisch to acctpt the nom-
ination for the presidency of the Zion-
ist Organization of America, and
"Whereas Daniel Frisch is deserving,
of this call to the highest office in the
ZOA because of his loyalty and devo-
tion to the Zionist movement and be-
cause of his vision and ability to meet
new, problems and to adopt new prob-
lems, to further our movement in the
light of new situations created by the
establishment of the'-Jewish State, and
"Whereas Daniel Frisch has made
his w ay from the rank and tile. of
Zionist membership to his present high
position in the Zionist movement and
is steeped in Jewish culture and tra-
dition and known to the masses of
American Jewry for his prolific art-
cies and numerous public addresses in
:Yiddish and in English, and
"Whereas Daniel Frisch is equally
well known to the people of I,srael
who,se language he speaks fluently and
in Whose behalf he has labored ardu-
ously; now. therefore,
"Be _ • Resolved that the Executive
Board of the Michigan Zionist Region,
meeting this day, March 27, in Grand
Rapids, representing a membership of
more than 6,000 enrolled Zionists, en-
dorses the candidacy of Daniel Frisch
for the ZOA presidency and calls upon
the 52nd annual convention to elect
him unanimously to that office."

Meanwhile, the proposal

ries," Tuesday evening, April 5,

made by The Detroit Jewish
News that Judge Simon Rifkind
shOuld be called upon to accept
the ZOA presidency is gaining
momentum and has received sup-
port from many quarters. Other
candidates have been mentioned
for the ZOA presidency, and ,
while Mr. Frisch has received
endorsemerits in Chicago, New
York and New Jersey, in ad i-
tion to the action of the Michigan
Zionist Region's Executive Com-
mittee, there is far from unan-
imity on the proposal made pub-
lic by Mr. Jacobs.
Criticism is being hurled at the
present ZOA leadership for hav-
ing set a date for the forthcom-
ing convention five weeks earlier
than usual. The ZOA's action is
branded by the Committee for
Progressive Zionism as "harmful
to the $250,000,000 UJA cam-
paign" because many Zionist
leaders will be critically needed
to stimulate campaigns in their
communities. The CPZ proposes
a nine-point -program calling for:
1. Repudiation of the present
ZOA leadership; 2. an end to the
present partisan tendencies of the
ZOA administration; 3. endorse-
ment of liberal thinking on social
and economic-- problems; 4. to
bring pro-Zionist Amepican Jew-
ish community directly into Zion--
ist life; 5. re-establishment of
friendly relations between ZOA
administration and authorities in
Washington; 6. columns of ZOA
publications to be opened to all
members regardless of their atti-
tudes; 7. convention issues to be
discussed freely by regions and
distizicts; 8. free and open dis-
cussion to be re-introduced at
conventions; 9. closed ballot to be
re-introduced at next convention.
Responding to requests from
Zionist Districts all over the coun-
try, the Committee for Progres-
sive Zionism within the ZOA an-
nounced that it has called a
nominating convention at the
Hotel Commodore on April 17
which will select a slate of of-
ficers to be presented at the ZOA
convention on May 28.
