"LIDDY RECORD
BEST"
—Detroit News, Jan. 16, 1949.
That is what one Detroit news-
paper said of Common Pleas
Judge Ralph W. Liddy's attention
to court duties after an extensive
independent investigation only
last month.
But that is only part of the. story
—a closer look at the record
shows:
*That taxpayers continue to bene-
fit • to the total of many times
Judge Liddy's salary each year
because of the adoption of his
recommendation to empanel
juries only for the first half of
each month, thus cutting jury
expense in half.
*that disposition of cases has
been speeded and savings of
many thousands eftected as the
result of another Liddy innova-
tion providing for judgment on
motion, based on affidavits . . .
thereby relieving attorneys and
litigants of costly and time con-
suming court appearances:
*that working zn.exi and women
are no _longer sibjected to in-
justice and hardship of having
their paycheck tied up by gar-
nishment before case even comes
tc• trial, which was common pro-
cedure in this court before Judge
Liddy's courageous public de-
nunciation forced its discontinu-
ance.
*that in the past five years (1944
to 1948 inclusive) Judge Liddy
has disposed of a total of -24,447
cases and that his judgment has
been reversed in only 12 of the
cases appealed—an extraordinary
ratio of one reversal for every
2,037 cases tried.
But Judge Liddy's record of pub-
lic service dates tack beyond the
24 years he has been a Common
Pleas Court Judge. Since obtain-
ing his L.L.B. degree from the
Detroit College of Law, he has
been successively lawyer, teach-
er, soldier and legislator,
During his two terms as Detroit
representative in the Michigan
legislature (1919 to 1922 inclus-
ive) he was prominently identi-
fied with many important court
reform measures, notably the De-
troit Recorders Court re-organ-
ization, and in his second term
became chairman of the House
committee on judiciary—only De-
troit Representative to win this
distinction in over a third of a
century.
When he became a judge, the
jurisdiction of the Court was only ,
$500. In time it was increased to
$1,000, and later to $1,500, a
measure of the growth of public
confidence in the competence of
the Court.
We believe that people believe in
Ralph Liddy. During the recent
primary he was endorsed by the
voters alniost 2 to 1 over any of
Op untried men competing
against him. He led every run-
ner-up in the court in -every
ward.
But every vote still counts in an
election just as every good judge
still counts ill a very large bench.
That is why we urge you and
your friends to assist in his re-;
election, April 4.
