History Week Is Coming
Superb Records
Richard Tucker's
tantorial Jewels'
Richard Tucker's "Havdoloh" is
one of the most beautiful records
that The Jewish News reviewer
has ever listened to. The eminent
Metropolitan Opera tenor has
positively made a very great
marks with this work.
It is part of the recordings that
have been issued by Columbia
Records Inc. under the title "Can-
torial Jewels." The six songs-
Kidush, Havdoloh, Yir-u Eineinu,
Yehi Rotzon, Tzadik Adoshem
and Ki K'shimcho—are sung with
chorus and orchestra conducted
by Sholom Secunda.
Tucker's voice is superb and
his interpretations surpass in
feeling the greatest.cantors of all
times. The six songs in the set of
Cantorial Jewels were wisely
selected. They provide an excel-
lent range for the great tenor as
well as for the fine accompanying
orchestra.
On another occasion, we com-
mended Mr. Tucker for another
of his great Columbia Records
which includes the two selections
of Kol Nidre and Eili Eili. The
interpretations of Jewish music
by Tucker have enriched the Co-
lumbia recordings and are bring-
ing to Jewish homes the great
voice of a man who not only is
one of the leading tenors of all
time but who understands the
spirit of the Hebrew selections.

Revived Sanhedrin Still
Far Off, Chief Rabbi Says
JERUSALEM (MNB) — Many
years must elapse before a San-
hedrin could be properly revived
Chief Rabbi Isaac H. Herzog told
a group of 'journalists.
The chief rabbi's statement was
in reply to a question whether
the Israeli Supreme Court could
be considered a modern Sanhe-
drin. The problem originally
came up when Henri A. Robbe
Groskamp, a Dutch Protestant,
filed a petition with the Israeli
Supreme Court asking for a re-
trial of Jesus of Nazareth on the
grounds that the latter's first trial
was illegal. Groskamp contended
that the Supreme Court was the
successor to the Sanhedrin and,
therefore, must retry the case.
The matter is now before Su-
preme Court President Justice
Moshe Smoira who regards the
petition as having raised "an in-
teresting question."

JANET'S - will be
WASHINGTON, (JTA)—Birth-
day greetings from Israel were
conveyed by Ambassador Eliahu
to Albert Einstein on his 70th
birthday. The message said:
"The people and Government of
Israel congratulate you on your
70th birthday and wish you many
happy returns."
The American Friends of the
Hebrew University presented
Prof. Einstein with an honorary
Doctor of Philosophy degree. The
presentation was made at EM-
stein's residence at Princeton, N.
.5., by Dr. Israel S. Wechsler,
president of the American
Friends.
NEW YORK (MNB) — Non-
Jewish members of a mixed mar-
riage will not be banned from
immigrating to Israel, but visa
preferences will be accorded to
Jewish: immigrants and • their
families who, after languishing
so many years in. DP camps de-
serve first consideration, Dr.
Yitchak Werfel, immigration
head of the Jewish Agency, de-
clared.
His statement clarified a pre-
vious MNB dispatch which was
misquoted to read that all non-
Jews will be completely excluded
from Israel unless they convert
to Judaism.
An additional explanation was
also offered for the extreme
caution being exercised in regard
to non-Jews coming from Europe.
Earlier in the year wise services
carried reports of former Nazis
and pro-Nazis who sought cr-n-
version to Judaism in order to
nience of those

gain preference in admission to
Israel. Many of these former
Nazis went as far as to marry
Jewish persons, thereby hoping
to disguise their former Nazi
affiliations. It is against these
unwanted elements who were re-
sponsible for so much Jewish
tragedy that the new state must
maintain careful vigil, Dr. Wer-
fel added.
