The visit in Detroit on Tues-
day of Abba Eban,, Israel's Rep- )
resentative to the United Nations,
was a signal for enthusiastic en-
rollment of large numbers of
Detroiters as workers in the
Allied Jewish Campaign.
Mrs. Max Frank presided at
the rally at Temple Beth El.
Abraham Srere and Louis Berry
were among the local , leaderS who
addressed the meeting in the eve-
ning at the Book Cadillac Hotel.
Mr. Eban outlined the latest oc-
currences affecting Israel and
appealed for as successful drive
to assure support for Israel,
through the United Jewish Ap-
peal, in its immigration, defense
and economic development pro-
grams.
An outpouring of women
workers at the afternoon meet-
ing necessitated the removal of
the Women's Division meeting
from the Brown Memorial
Chapel to main auditorium of
Temple Beth El. Mr. Eban's
address was acclaimed upon
its conclusion by Dr. B. Bene-
dict Glazer who urged those in
attendance to spread the im-
portant message among all
women in Detroit. The Israeli
-flag was placed on the Temple
pulpit during Mr. Eban's ad-
dress.
Reviewing the last year's
occurrences and referring to the
activities in Israel as miracles of
Jewish decision, Mr. Eban said
that the Jewish State will be ever
grateful to those who followed
the leadership of the " United
States in recognizing Israel. He
said that Israel is still behind in
acknowledging the recognitions
and stated that the Jewish state
is the only nation in the world
with an international birth cer-
tificate:
Emphasizing that Israel seeks
peace with the Arabs, Mr. Eban
-
Saul Gottlieb, regional director
for the Michigan and • Ohio Valley
stated that "if we can communi- areas of the Zionist Organization
cate Israel's dynamic example to of America, has joined the staff
the Middle East we shall make a of the Jewish Welfare Federation
marked contribution to world
peace."
The Jewish state, he declared,
will never agree to the shutting
of its doors to immigration but it
turns to the Jews throughout the
world to carry the burden of pro-
viding for the new settlers. "You
must and you shall share this bur-
den of immigration with us," he
said. "That relationship can not
be described as sacrifice or gener-
osity. The appeal is made in be-
half of the battered remnants of
disaster who are separated from
their final redemption by finan-
cial difficulty. We must think in
terms of our inescapable moral
obligation. If you shared in our
military glory, do not hesitate to
share in the pain of national re-
birth."
A stirring address also was de-
livered by Samuel Rothberg of

precedented action in the cam- for two months, the duration of

"They are people, the same
sentative by Max Osnos, member
of the UJA delegatiOn to Israel as we, that's the thrill of their
from Detroit, upon his return liberation," he said.
Mr. asnos related a story told
from Israel to attend the historic
to the UJA delegation by Golda
UJA conference.
Mr. Osnos, who visited in Paris, Myersoni Labor Minister in the
Marseilles, Rome and Brussels in Israeli Cabinet. Mrs. Myerson said
addition to touring Israel, said that the JewS of America could
that the more he traveled in haVe made the 1947 UJA drive
foreign lands the happier he grew their last fund-raising campaign
—by making it a failure and
thereby destroying Israers
chances to succeed. By making it
a success, - she said, U. S. Jewry
assumed a new responsibility to
make a success of the - partner-
ship with Israel to build the Jew-
ish state.
The Detroit leader asserted that
every time he visited- an immi-.
gration reception center in Israel
he realized more fully the value
of UJA work to provide finances
for the large scale settlement of
Jews.
"A new civilization is being
built," he said. "Out of the State
of Israel will emerge a progres-
sive program for the Middle East
for the benefit of Arabs as well
as Jews." • •
He spoke with admiration, of
the work of the 'Weizmann In-
stitute and declated that •Dr.
