Commerce Director Cite
Israel's Import Future
At Merchant Ship Rites

NEW YORK, (Palcor)-Israel
has already imported $11,000,000
in materials from the United
States, and, despite "troublesome
times" has exported $2,000,000 of
cargoes to this country, John F.
McKiernan, regional director of
the Department of Commerce,
declared at the dedication cere-
monies of the , ship Haifa, first
transatlantic vessel of the new
Israeli merchant fleet.
Urging measures to build in-
creased confidence between Amer-
ica and Israel as a foundation for
trade relations, McKiernan cited
Israel's great potential attraction
for tourists.
Bartley Crum, former U. S.
member of the Anglo-American
Inquiry Committee on Palestine,
opened the proceedings with a
short address, after which Capt.
Terrence Bond, of the Haifa,
turned the Canadian flag over to
Maxwell T. Stuart, Canadian
Trade Commissioner, and iri turn
received the Israeli flag from
Gideon Straus, Israeli Consul to
Canada. The vessel is a former
Canadian Victory ship.
A congratulatory cable from
President Chaim Weizmann was
read at the dedication. Israeli
Ambassador to the U. S. Eliahu
Elath, who was unable to attend
the affair, sent a telegram from
Washington. Other speakers in-
cluded Aubrey S. Eban, Israeli
representative to the UN, Rep.
Jacob Javits, and Julius Simon,
president of the Palestine Eco-
nomic Corporation.
