Rep. Louis B. Heller, chosen in a special election Feb. 15 to fill the vacancy created by the death of Rep. John J. Delaney of the 7th Congressional District in New "York, was sworn in. by Speaker of the House Rayburn Feb. 26": Rep. Sol Bloom, Democratic member of Congress for 26 years, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs ,Committee for a good number of those, and a man who ryas played a ;leading role in the conduct of American foreign af- fairs, died March 7 of a heart attack. The last public appearance that Sol Bloom made was before • a meeting of the Association of Eng- lish-Jewish Newspapers here in Washington Feb. 20. He spoke with feeling of tne struggle that had been • waged to make the Jewish state possible and urged American Jews to stand behind Israel and continue to support it-in its efforts to grow and pros- per Heller found he had a taste for Iraqi Jews Protest Baghdad Executions politics even before he graduated from high school. The next year, at 19, he was already learning the "grass roots" touch in his local Democratic club by "licking stamps and handing out litera- ture." In the next few years he sandwiched in such political chores as speaking from the back of trucks and filling in for candi- dates with selling Jewish news- papers by Batterman's, working in a law office, going to law school, and holding down several other jobs. After studying law at Fordham University Heller was admitted to the New York Bar in 1927. The next years found him engaged in several stiff primary fights in his Democratic district: In. 1942 the District leader brought Heller I in on his ticket in a very_ close election. Heller was the only suc- cessful candidate and won a seat in the New York State Senate for 1943-44 term, a post he was to fill only that one term because of the reapportionment of his district. It was the only place in New York state where three Senators; resided In one district. In 1944 Heller became leader of his assembly district, a post he still holds.
