• UJA Controversy Ends;
UPA Backs the Agency

Israel Premier
To Address JNF
Parley by Radio

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News)

NEW YORK.—The controversy over the administration
of the United Jewish Appeal ended here late Monday night
with a vote of the board of directors of the United Palestine
Appeal to accept the Jewish Agency Executive's decision
which returns Henry Morgenthau, Jr, to the general chair-
manship of the 1949 UJA drive and Henry Montor to its
executive directorship.
The vote at Monday's meeting was 52 in favor of •c-
cepting the Agency Executive's decision and 30 abstentions.
Abstainees were supporters of Dr. Abba Hillel Silver who
recently resigned from the Agency Executive over the UJA
decision. Judge,Morris Rothenberg, national chairman of the
Jewish National Fund of the U. S., was named acting na-
tional chairman of UPA succeeding Herman L. Weisman.
Before the meeting, Dr. Silver revealed that he had rec-
ommended to his supporters on the UPA board that they
abstain from voting on the Agency Executive's decision. In
his statement to his supporters, Dr. Silver called the Agency's
action "unwarranted intervention." He also declared: "Be-
cause we were thus confronted with a lamentable fait accom-
pli, we had no other recourse than advise our friends to re-
frain from voting at the board Meeting. We did not wish
further to prolong the controversy. On the other hand, we
could not approve the action which was taken. We wish it
clearly understood that those who have demanded absolute
control over, the campaign and those of thEi executive of the
Jewish Agency who capitulated to such demands must now
assume full responsibility for the campaign."
