Posy's 'Israeli Teaks':
Good Addition to Youth
Narrative Literature
An able story-teller appears on
the scene through the covers of
one of the latest Bloch Co. pub-
lications. "Israeli Tales a n d
Legends" reveal the true narra-
tive art of the author, Arnold
Posy.
First told to his daughter, the
19 stories in this book include
nine original creations, the other
10 being adaptations from folk-
tales and legends-T a 1 m u dic,
Midrashic and medieval.
The 18 drawings illustrating the
book are by John Morgan.
Some of the stories are so short
that they can be read in less
than five minutes. This is a great
attribute in , story-telling and
should help popularize a work
which can be picked up at any
time for the enjoyment.of a good
story, well told.
A veritable treasure in folk-
lore is offered in these stories.
It opens with tales of the mediev-
al Elijah-one of the longest
stories in the book-arid proceeds
with a variety of tales about
Jokhanan and a merciful queen,
a mysterious beggar in the days
of the pogromist Chmielnicki and
the fulfillment of a prophecy;
tales about Amos ben Ezra and
the magic' ring, Ahab's faithful
wife Zeppora in the days of King
Hyrkanos II of Jerusalem, a
miracle of the ethrogim, a legend
about the humility of Hillel, a
story about Marranos, a legend
about creation, etc.
Intended for children 11 to 14,
this book of legends and well
told tales will be enjoyed by
young and old. It is a good ad-
dition to Jewish children's nar-
rative literature.
