Italian Censors Ban Film
On Palestine Made in Italy

Jascha Heifetz, like most of us,
believes in luck. The violinist,
who appears here on Feb. 14 at
Masonic'aud i-
torium says:
`There's not a
living human
ibeing who does
not need luck.
i:Before a concert

Heifetz the accompanist,
whether the lights will fail or a
string might break, or a page-
turner turns over two pages at
once, as occasionally happens."
Luck and constant vigilance—
success demands both, he says.
Tolstoi's novel "Anna Kare-
nina," which Heifetz read when
he was a boy in Russia,' has al-
ways influenced him.

ROME; (JTA)—An American-
produced film, made in Italy, en-
titled "The Earth Cries Out"
which has as its background the
struggle between the B,ritish and
the Jews in Palestine, has been
temporarily barred from exhibi-
tion here by the film censors in
the Italian Foreign Ministry.
The picture was produced by
Albert Salvatori of Los Angeles,
using the studio and office facil-
ities of the Lux Film Studios of
Italy. Some of the sequences
were photographed in displaced
persons camps in this country,
and others in Palestine.
Film quarters here say that
the Foreign Ministry objects to
the film because it is anti-Brit-
ish in overtone and thus might
jeopardize relations with Lon-
don, upon whose decision de-

7 Fine Short Stories
By Delmore Schwartz

"The World Is a Wedding," by
Delmore Schwartz, is referred to
on the cover of the book, publish-
ed by New Directions of Norfolk,
Conn., as containing two short
novels and five stories. Actually,
it is a collection of seven short
stories which deal with many of
the painful issues of life and
which use the Jews as the guinea
pig. -
"A Bitter Farce" is perhaps
the best in the entire collection
which has 'been given the' title
of the first -story. In "A-Bitter
Farce" the author, who ••writes
exceptionally well, concerns him-
self with the problem of anti-
Semitism, with the intermarriage
issue and with the perplexing
matters which confront Jews and
Christians in inter-faith and inter-
race relations. The essay pre-
sen.ted to the hero of the story—
her teacher—by a young girl who
seeks to solve the issue of whom
to choose in marriage, "a China,
man, p Jew or a Negro," intro-
duces the interesting thesis in
this story, which comes to a cli-
max with the attack on Jews by
an Irishman and the Jewish hero's
defense of the Jewish position.
Other stories in the book are:
"New Year's Eve," "America!
America!," "The Statues," "The
Child Is the Meaning of This
Life" "In Dreams Begin Respon-
sibilities."
"The World. Is a Wedding," is
a better than average collection
of short stories by a man who
has gained recognition with his
earlier works, "Shenandoah" and
"Genesis" and who was a Gug-
genheim Fellowship winner.

Once Helped Jews, Now
Asks Aide for Herself

When Vera Chahit Suhwardi,
Russian wife. of the Prime Min-
ister of Bengal, pleaded with her
husband to legalize the position
of the Jewish refugees in the
state of Bengal, she never thought
that the t i m
would come
when she would
need similar as-
sistance herself.
Through her in-
tercession with
ithe Prime Min-
ister, the gov-
ernment of Ben-
gal adopted a
favorable a t t
Vera Suhwardi tude to refugees.
When a change of government
occurred, Mrs. Suhwardi was
compelled to flee India along
with her two small children, be-
cause of the threats of the fanatic
element who felt that this Christ-
ian woman was a handicap to
their country. Arriving in the
United States with a diplomatic
Visa, she came to -HIAS (Hebrew
Immigrant Aid Society) for help,
this time a refugee herself. HIAS
experts decided that the only way
to legalize. her stay was by means
of a Private Bill enacted by Con-
gress. Congressman Sol. Bloom
(D., N.Y.), after acquainting him-
self with the case,. acquiesced to
HIA$' request that he introduce
such a bill.

NEW YORK (JTA)—The value
of Jewish property confiscated
by the governments of Iraq and
Egypt amounts to about $80,000,-
000 in each country, Dr. Nahum •
Goldmann, chairman of the ex-
ecutive of the World Jewish Con-
gress, told a press conference
upon his return from Paris.
A White. Paper dealing with
the persecution of Jews in Egypt
and Iraq was released at the press
conference. It charged the gov-
ernments of the 'two Arab states
with conducting "a deliberate
and. calculated program to ex-
terminate a defenseless minority
group." Dr. Goldmann expressed
the hope that. UN member na-
tions, upon receipt of, the White
Paper, will communicate to the
governments of Egypt and Iraq
their outrage over the mistreat-
ment of the Jews in their coun-
tries.
