Members Arrive in Jerusalem

(Direct JTA Teletype Wires to The
Jewish News).

JERUSALEM. (JTA)—The ar-
rival here Monday night of some
members of the United Nations
Palestine Conciliation Commis-
sion was overshadowed by last-
minute election speeches made
simultaneously by leading Ma-
pai Mapam and Mizrachi lead-
ers in halls, movie theaters and
other public places.
•
Jerusalem's Jews turned out to
hear late pre-election talks by
Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe
Shertok, Dr. Moshe Sneh, leader
of the United Workers Party, and
Rabbi' Meir Berlin, member of
the State Council and top Miz
rachi leader.
Claude DeBoissanger, French
member of the conciliation body,
F. Wilkens and J. Halderjan, Am-
erican advisors to the UN Com-
mission, arrived .in Jerusalem,
while Husseyid C. Yaltchin, Turk-
ish member of the group, came
Tuesday.
The commission members were
met by represent.b.tives of the
UN truce. observers at Kalandia
airfield in the Arab area here
and were conducted through the
Jewish lines to Government
House which will serve as of-
ficial headquarters. The build-
ing will be guarded jointly by
10 Israeli and 10 Transjordanian
troops, under the command of
Major Loriaux, of the Belgian
army.
Arab officials were not present
in Government House when the
conciliation commission members
arrived, but entered the building
after the UN flag was hoisted.

Charge Gieseking
A Nazi Since 1933

Requesting that a visitor's visa
be denied to Walter Gieseking,
German pianist, the American
Jewish Congress charged that
Gieseking's "known collaboration
with the Nazi movement began
at least as early as 1933, well be-
fore the pressure of the Nazi re-
cruitment had become wide-
spread or reached the peak of its
intensity." That he has not modi-
fied his views to this day, is clear
from "the pains he took when in-
terroga*d by a U. S. Agency, to
excuse and justify Nazism."
In a letter to Herve J. L'Heu-
reux, chief of the Visa Division
of the Department of State, Rabbi
Irving Miller, chairman of the
executive committee of t h e
American Jewish Congress, pro-
vided available evidence.
In 1944 Gieseking gave seven
consecutive piano recitals in Tur-
key, in an effort to complement
Nazi propaganda and diplomatic
effort to recruit Turkey into the
Axis camp, Rabbi Miller charges.

Jews to leave Cyprus, after the

cross section of 52,000 Jewish de-
tainees who have passed through
Cyprds camps since 1946. Their
embarkation was assisted by rep-
resentatives of the Joint Distribu-
tion Committee and the Red
Mogen Dovid.

JERUSALEM (JTA)—The ex-
ecutive of the Jewish Agency
here decided to have all its mem-
bers fly to the United States to
hold a plenary session in New
York instead of in Jerusalem as
originally scheduled. It is under-
stood that the decision to change
the meeting place from Jeru-
salem to New York was taken
primarily in connection with
present developments . in the
United Jewish Appeal and the
crisis in the United Palestine
Appeal.

Sevin Delays Recognition.

LONDON. (JTA)—F or eign
Secr.etary Ernest Bevin succeeded
in persuading a special meeting
of the British cabinet to delay
British recognition of Israel.
Claiming that the countries
which signed the Brussels "pact
must -act together, Bevin secured
the agreement of the cabinet to
delay further action on the recog-
nition of Israel until after the
meeting of Foreign Ministers of
Britain, France, Belgium, Hol-
land and Luxembourg which was
to take place in Lond'on Thurs-
day. It was learned here that un-
less parliament forces a change
at its debate on Israel, British
recognition of Israel will have
political strings attached and will
be carried out generally with
least conceivable good grace.

Suggested in Israel

TEL AVIV (Palcor)—The pos-
sibility that sources of atomic en-
ergy may exist in Israel was hint-
ed by Prime Minister David Ben
Gurion in his address before the
annual Engineers and Architects
convention.
The Prime Minister spoke of a
gigantic irrigation system chan-
nelling the plentiful water re-
sources of Galilee to the fields of
the arid Negev. "Two other ma-
jor tasks facing our engineers,"
Ben Gurion said, "are building
homes for hundreds of thousands
of new immigrants • and finding
new sources of energy in the coun-
try, including, perhaps, atomic
energy." The Prime Minister de-
clared that Israel must build a
high standard of living if it would
attract Jews from all over the
world.
