Behrman, Publishes
Biography of Herzl
By Deborah Pessin

Behrman House, Inc., 1261
Broadway, New York 1, N. Y.,
has published a biography of
Theodor Herzl by Deborah Pessin,
with drawings by Laszlo Matulay.
It is an easy reading book for
children and attempts to cover
all incidents in the life of the
founder of the political Zionist
movement.
While this volume has many
merits, especially its popular ap-
peal based on the complete cover
age of all stages in Herzl's life,
it also has many faults. It reads
too much like a newspaper story.
There are too many thoughts that
are inverted in parenthesis. They
sound like afterthoughts and do
not belong in a book intended for
children. There is no excuse for
spelling the name "Theodore"
When it is generally known that
the "e" was not used by Herzl
or by historians in referring to
the great leader's first name.
Perhaps Miss Pessin tries to be
too dramatic. In the main, how-
ever, she has succeeded in inter-
preting the genius of Herzl, in
describing the tragic era of the
Dreyfus affair, in delineating the
life story of one of Jewry's great
leaders.
