Bevin's Hitlerite Methods
Condemned by Ruth Gruber
3-,000 Hear Noted Author's Analysis of Israel's . Triumph at
Annual Event of Ladies' Auxiliary of Jewish National ,
Fund;$70,000 Raised for Land Redemption
Egypt's decision that it is safer
to sit down with the Jews to • talk
peace than to accept Bevin's help
is the turning point in the battle
for justice in the Middle East, Dr.
Ruth, Gruber, eminent author,
lecturer and traveler, told 3,000
men and women at' the annual
donor event of the Ladies' Aux-
iliary - of the . Jewish National
Fund at the Masonic Temple last
Sunday afternoon.
In an emphatic condemnation
of the continued destructive pol-
icies of the present British gov-
ernment, Miss Gruber declared
that the situation on Cyprus is
even worse today than it was a
year ago, that.11,000 men, women
and . children are without water,
that they are treated indecently,
that Britain, under the High Com-
missioner for Cyprus Sir Godfrey
Collins (whom the internees call.
Sir God), are acting without legal
right to keep them there.
features included songs and im-
personations by Shoshanah - Da-
mari and Joseph Goland, with
Moshe Wilensky as accompanist.
The three guests stars are from .
Israel.

stated. "Everyone in Israel _ is
intoxicated, although you
never see a drimk in Jerusalem,
Tel Aviv or Haifa. And the
greatest change that I can re-
port from Israel is that there
are no more Englishmen left
there."
Declaring that every one has
grown\two inches taller in Israel,
'Dr. Gruber said that the people
nevertheless are acting with hu-
mility in accepting the miracle of
the past year. All of the myths
were exploded and Great Britain
was defeated in her destructive
efforts, she pointed out, and re-
calling the Arab threat to drive
the Jews into the sea she said
that the only people who were
driveri to the brink of the sea
were the Haifa Arabs who had
left their - homes in unjustified
fright.
Paying tribute to the heroism
and wisdom of the leaders of the
Israel government, Miss Gruber
predicted that it would over-
whelmingly be re-elected in the
coming election. She declared
that three weapons were respon-
sible for Israel's triumphs: 1.
Ein breira—there was no other
alternative for people who had to
defend their homes and had no
other place to go to; Z: the Molo-
tov Cocktails, the only weapon
the Jews possessed, and 3. the
help that came from American
Jewry.
Among the great triumphs
scored by Israel, although out-
.numbered 40 to 1 by Arabs,
which Miss Gruber included
among the miracles of the war
were the battles of Daganiah,
where Jews, with only - a few
Molotov cocktails, turned back
armored tanks; Safed, where the
tide was turned by 37 Palmach
Members, and the Negev. She
related instructions given to Jew-
ish defenders not to -throw Molo-
tov cocktails at Arabs "until you
see the whites of their eyes," and
how British-made tanks carrying .
insignia "we like to kill Jews"-
were routed.

By BENNETT CERF
REPORTER, sent' to cover an opening of the Metropoli
tan opera season (in the days before patrons made news
by standing on their heads in the lobby, or doing a strip-
tease in the lounge) didn't
wait to see who turned out.
He copied down the names
from the brass plates on
the doors to the boxes,
turned in his story, and
went off to a prize fight.
Unfortunately, the, brass
plates bore the names of the
original box-holders. The next
day the society editor told him
sourly, "You covered a • lot of
ground last night: not only the
opening of the opera, but the '
opening of a number of vaults
in Woodlawn Cemetery."

Who "originates" anecdotes, and who has the right to stop anyone
from re-telling them ?
Nicholas Murray Butler summed up the situation this -way: "In
the case of the first person to use an anecdote, it is originality; in
the second. plagiarism; in the third, rehashing a stale story. Finally.
after a short interval, a fourth uses the anecdote. In his case, he is
credited with research!"
The Flonzaley Quartet had just concluded a concert at Town Hall
when a lady descended 'upon the second violinist, and demanded a.
look at his instrument. She examined it minutely, and then ex-
claimed, "It looks exactly like a first violin!"
"What do you keep in that lovely vase on the mantel ?" asked
Mrs. Treeger.
"My husband's ashes," answered,Mrs. Tillman.
"Forgive me," gasped Mrs. Treeger. "I didn't know he was dead."
"He's far, from dead," explained Mrs. Ullman. "He's simply too
-
lazy to look for an ash tray.'
