Annual Service
At Temple Israel

Members of Temple Israel
Men's Club will conduct their an-
nual laymen's•Sabbath eve serv-
ice at 8:30 p.m. Frday, Jan. 21, -
at the Detroit institute of Arts
Lecture Hall.

Hillel DireCtor Speaks
At Second Bnai David
Friday Night Program

lir. Max Kapustin, director of
Wayne University Hillel Founda-
tion, will be guest speaker at the
Friday night gathering at 8:30
p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at Bnai
David Synagogue, Elmhurst at
14th.
The gathering, the second in
the current series, is dedicated to
the religious schciol. The topic
of Dr. Kapustin's talk will be
"Religious' Education."
Rabbi Joshua Sperka will in-
troduce the speaker, and Cantor
Hynian Adler with his Choir, un-
der the direction of Harry Siegel,
will render Sabbath music.

Banquet Sunday Fetes
Rabbi Leo Goldman

A banquet• in honor of Rabbi
Leo Goldman. will be held at 6
p.M. Sunday, • Jan. 16, at Bnai
Moshe .Synagogue.
Rabbi 'Goldman, a graduate of
the Zevilier Yeshivath in Poland,
served_ in the Polish army' during
World War II. He was formerly

Arrangements for the laymen's
service are being made under the
direction of Reuben Levine, vice
president of the club. Harry Plis-
kow is chairman of . the Men's
Club's year-round program, of
which this service is an annual
feature.
The Men's Clubs annual father-
ments for the congregation at the
social hour following the service.
The Mens' Club's annual father-
children's party will be held
Sunday, Jan. 16, at the Jewish
Center. The program will include
movies, favors and refreshments.
Tuesday evening, Jan. 18,
Temple Israel men will be guests
at an interfaith dinner at the
Brewster Congregational Church,
Linwood and Hogarth.

Mizrachi Honors
Israel Chief Rabbi

Mizrachi Organization of De-
troit has arranged a special pro-.
-gram to be devoted to the life
and accomplishment of Isaac Her-
zog, chief rabbi of the State of
Israel, on the occasion of his 60th
birthday to take place at 8 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 23, at Beth Aaron
Synagogue, Wyoming near Curtis.
Rabbi Max Engelberg, of Cleve-
land, the guest speaker, will' pay
tribute to Rabbi Herzog, stressing
the values and ideals of Mizrachi
as personified in the chief rabbi
of Israel. Rabbi.P. Katz of Beth
Aaron and Dr. M. A. Last, presi-
dent of the congregation, will
greet the assembly.'
Forty-five new life . members
have been enrolled by Mizrachi
in the past three weeks. Max
Kaplan and -Sam Nelson, grand-
parents of Morton Kaplan, who
recently became Bar Mitzvah,
honored their grandson On that
occasion by enrolling him as a life
member in Mizrachi and also
subscribing themselves to life
membership. The life members
will be presented at the annual
event of Mizrachi at Shaarey Ze-
dek, Sunday evening, Feb. 13.

Pierre Van Paassen, eminent
author and lecturer, one of the
leading Christian Zionists, will
speak at the late Friday evening
services at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek on Jan. 21.

Institute to Reopen

At the annual election of offi-
cers of the Women's League of
Young Israel, Mrs. Harry L. Blitz
was elected to head the group,
with Mrs. Solomon N. Cohen as
vice-president; Mrs. Charles T.
Gellman, treasurer; Mrs. Milton
Duchan, secretary. - Mrs. Hyman
R. Cohen, retiring president, an-
nounced that installation will be
held at the home of Mrs. Meyer
Weisenfeld, 4261 Sturtevant, next
Tuesday evening.
The Women's • League, aside
from efforts to raise $10,000 to-
wards the erection of the Youth
Center on Dexter and Fullerton,
sponsors financially • youth ac-
tivities of Young Israel's nine
boys and girls groups.
Young Israel's groups are spon-
soring a membership social in the
form of a hard times M'Laveh
Malkah, Saturday evening, Jan.
29, at Turover Hall, Dexter at
Monterey.
Dr. Joseph Kaminetsky, direc-
tor of education of Torah Ume-
sorah, will open the spring term
of Detroit Young Israel's Insti-
tute of Jewish Studies Monday
evening, Jan. 21, at Central High
School.
The first class meeting will be
held -Feb. 1.
At 8 p.m. registration will be
conducted and at 8:45 the public
lecture . will. begin.
The <Institute offers the fol-
lowing courses: Basic Hebrew,
advanced Hebrew, Palestinology,
Talmudic literature, 18._ centur-
ies of Galut, and Judaism in
practice. Lecturers for the spring
term are: Rabbi Isaac Jacobson,
Dr. Hugo Mandelbaum, Rabbi
Israel Halpern, Rabbi Max Ka-
pustin and Rabbi Joshua S.
Sperka. Registration will also be
open Jan. 18 at Central, the last
session of the winter term, and

Feb. 6 . as pick-up day for . their
forthcoming rummage sale, ac-

Usable clothing, dishes, toyS
and brie a brae will be' accepted
for the sale. Procceeds will be
used by the Sisterhood for the
new Temple Israel building.

gogue Administration with
Special Reference . to Finance."
This is the first time in the
history of the college: that an
executive secretary has • been
asked to speak to prospective
rabbis on synagogue administra-
tion.
