Our Letter Box
Says High Prices of Kosher
Meats Force Trefe Buying
Editor, The Jewish News:
Our Jewish community seems
to be adequately organized to
protect its best interests, and I
cannot. understand , why some-
thing is not being done about the
excessively high prices we are
paying for Kosher meats. Why
isn't something being done to
bring down the prices of kosher
meats? If the non-kosher best
cuts can be retailed for prices
like 49 cents per pound for chuck
and 69 cents per pound for a rib
roast (see ads in daily papers)
then why in the world must Jew-
ish consumers pay double and
more? My butcher assures me the
fault does not lie with the indi-
vidual butchers. Then, obviously,
somewhere along the line some-
one is making a lot of money at
the expense of kosher meat buy-
ers, and I believe it is the duty
of the organized Jewish com-
munity to find out who and Why.
.We talk so much about the
preservation of Jewish values
and we make such a to-do about
it in our various fund-raising ef-
forts. I can assure you that one
Jewish value will soon be chuck-
ed out of the window—namely
that of buying and eating kosher
meats. How" many of the women
reading this know of friends or
neighbors who frankly or
ashamedly admit buying non-
kosher ' cuts in order to save on
meat bills? Fram time to time
there have been so-called "meat
strikes." I am not proposing an-
other. I am asking that The Jew-
ish News place this matter before
the Jewish agencies best quali-
fied to make the necessary invest-
igations and to see to it that ac-
tion is taken.
Plea-se do not publish my name.
My butcher reads The Jewish
News, too.
