Last year's • Detroit - Histadrut
(Geverkshaften) Campaign achieved
the unprecedented ssumof almost
$275,000, almoSt 80 per cent over the
previous year. The number • of in-
dividual contributors increased to
more- than 6,000. Participating groups,
other than branches of the Labor Zionist
Movement, numbered 160. Whether they
g
were business roups, landsma:nschaften,
synagogues, family or fraternal groups,
they -were united in the great cause of
helping supply the .Histadrut of Israel
with urgently needed, funds so that the
heroic tasks of- caring for more newcom-
ers, strengthening and expanding the
varied cooperative enterprises and pre-
paring the immigrants for life in a Jew-
ish State could be accelerated.
High Proportion of Payment
With unmatched speed and enthusiasm,
pledges were payed, so that during the
year, $255,500 was sent to the National
Committee for Labor Israel for transmis-
sion to Israel. Because of the idealism and
enthusiasm that motivated the Histadrut
workers in their tasks, more than 95 per
cent of all contributions pledged already
have been paid and the expenses of con-
ducting the year's work is only 6.15 per
cent, a remarkable figure in view of
greatly increased costs.

paign is the success of the Detroit Jewish

HISTADRUT WILL MAKE A PLACE FOR THEM --
HISTADRUT—over 300,000 men, women and children joined in a vast
cooperative family of pioneering workers—is the backbone of the State of
Israel. It is the dynamic force, the manpower, the spirit that gave rise _to
the liberated Jewish national home. Its manpower made the desert bloom;
its herOic men and women are the core of Israel's armed forces; its leaders
have guided the ship of state to freedom.
HISTADRUT, which tirelessly through hundreds of emissaries, organized
and led the mass emigration from Europe, is today ready for the next major
step:
Israelis, civilian and military population.

A HALF MILLION IMMIGRANTS.
How Can Histadrut do the job?
The. Histadrut industrial and agricultural cooperatives, which give stability
to - Israel's economy, are geared to make room for thousands of newcomers.
Battered and beaten by war and DP camps, the refugees require physical and
mental care before they can become employable. New co-ops are being blue-
printed; vocational schools are being expanded. The semi-employable, the
middle-aged, the untrained youth — all can find room in the Histadrut co-
operative society.
— The life-line of Israel, is almost
entirely maintained by dauntless bus and truck
co-ops.
Culture — Newspapers, theatre, schools, radio and
film programs, Hebrew lessons, evening courses,
are provided for immigrants and workers through
appropriate Histadrut departments.
Security
Manpower mobilization is effected
largely through the use of the extensive co-op
network of Histadrut.
